General Description
The School of Education at Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate Director of Development to build philanthropic support for the School of Education and the engagement of key stakeholders. The Associate Director of Development will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and donors capable of making gifts in the $1,000–$100,000 range to meet the financial goals of the School of Education. They will build positive and purposeful relationships leading to major gifts, annual giving, and planned gifts. They will take the lead on growing the school's prospective donor pipeline, with a special focus on personal visits to donors and prospective donors. They also will oversee the design and implementation of annual cultivation and solicitation plans for key prospective donors. Requires a highly-driven individual with excellent organization and interpersonal skills, able to establish confidence and trust with donors and colleagues and be a self-directed team player.
Team Description
The Office of Development and External Relations is an integral part of the Dean's Office. The team is comprised of an associate dean, to which this position reports, as well as a Director of Constituent Engagement and Annual Fund, an assistant director, a corporate/foundation officer, a senior development coordinator, and an administrative coordinator.
Responsibilities
Fundraising and Prospect Management
- Work closely with the Associate Dean, development colleagues, and School of Education leaders to define and prioritize funding needs; develop funding proposals that align with the school's top priorities and fit donor interests through current and planned gifts
- From a pool of existing annual donors, and new prospects, manage a personal portfolio of approximately 100 prospects and donors to qualify, engage, visit, and solicit gifts of $1,000–$100,000, with a goal of at least 120 personal contacts each year, with travel as needed
- Plan, coordinate, and implement assigned fundraising activities for the School of Education, including cultivating, soliciting, and tracking gifts from individuals
- Raise on average $500K or more annually from major gift and annual fund donors; qualify, cultivate, draft proposals, solicit donors
- Identify prospects, coordinate strategies, and maximize efforts with central Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and its components: Research, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, and Foundation Relations
- Implement annual fund strategies to raise current use support from alumni and external constituencies; review and analyze solicitation data to cultivate new donors and grow the school's unrestricted giving
- Document contacts and strategies through ALADIN (the Johns Hopkins donor and prospect database); adhere to the policies and procedures for accepting, recording, and acknowledging gifts
- Actively contribute to the growth and enhancement of the annual and major giving programs through planning and collaboration led by the Associate Dean for Development External Affairs
Stewardship and Events
- Establish and maintain contact with prospects to develop their interest and participation in major School of Education fundraising projects and to provide information concerning the utilization of gifts
- Advance and refine programs focused on delivering high-quality donor interactions that foster long-term investment and engagement, as well as the continued growth of a robust annual giving program
- Assist with planning and coordinating major development events including dedications, stewardship programs and recognition events, and fundraising campaigns
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Three years related experience, with one year of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three years of demonstrated success fund-development role; direct experience raising funds in a higher education/research institution
- Knowledge of Johns Hopkins University and/or development operations, including familiarity with ALADIN (the Johns Hopkins donor and prospect database)
- Knowledge of fundraising/donor databases
- Experience with annual giving, planned giving, and major giving
- Ability to build and maintain an active portfolio comprised of qualified prospects and donors
- Must be mission-driven, motivated, and highly organized, as well as self-directed and focused on meeting/exceeding metric-driven visit, proposal, and financial goals
- Must have superb relationship management skills, demonstrating emotional acuity and the temperament to listen to, understand, and meaningfully engage donors, volunteers, and board members from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives
- Must have the personal presence and poise required to instill confidence and trust among board members, volunteers, school of education leadership, faculty, and major donors.
- Ability to share the mission and priorities of the School of Education with passion and persuasion, along with a genuine desire to build lasting relationships with the School's donor community
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to craft thorough personal letters, compelling proposals, and other communications
- Ability to multitask and work on multiple projects at a given time; must be able to prioritize with attention to detail and accuracy
- Must have the desire to work as a member of a collegial, collaborative, goal-oriented team in a results-oriented organization with high standards
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams
- Local and national travel is required, as is occasional work on evenings and weekends
- Other duties as assigned
