The Manager of Grounds will oversee and coordinate the work of a primarily unionized staff, all working to provide a beautiful campus for our students, visitors, and campus community. This position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the campus grounds, athletic fields, and college equipment, and oversees the snow and ice removal on campus with the support of the FMS staff. The manager develops, recommends, and implements solutions that impact several functional areas.
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Horticultural Science, Turf Grass Management, or other related field.
Required: 3 years of supervisory experience managing a team of subordinates within the landscape or turf grass industry with demonstrated management of complex snow removal operations similar in scope and scale to Goucher College. 2 years of experience building, managing, and tracking a departmental budget.
Preferred: 5 years of experience managing a team of subordinates within the landscape or turf grass industry or other organization with similar types of operations. Experience supervising union employees.
Basic operation of personal computer including MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Ability to write RFPs and communicate professionally via email.
Other Skills, Abilities, Qualifications:
Knowledge of computerized inventory system; work order system; artificial turf field maintenance practices; [YK1] [VA2] ability to effectively teach correct and industry standard practices to subordinate staff.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid class "C" driver's license with the ability to be insured through the College's insurance carrier; possession of or ability to obtain a valid class B CDL with P endorsement within 6 months of first date of employment; possession of or ability to obtain Maryland Pesticide and Fertilizer license within 18 months of first date of employment.
Team Leadership - promotes a productive working environment with high morale and a commitment to the quality of the campus environment. Directs a team of utility mechanics, landscape specialist, and horticultural specialist who combined with the manager of grounds are responsible for the campus grounds and asset inventory for the facilities operations. Perform personnel actions including but not limited to development and maintenance of employee job descriptions; creation of job ads, interviewing, and final hiring decisions; execution of performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and grievances. Create team working plans (schedules), delegate assignments to subordinates, and provide positive and informative coaching sessions to improve areas of team weakness as needed.
The manager of Grounds is responsible for overseeing the quality, productivity, and operations of the Grounds department. This includes the overall appearance of the grounds and all aspects of its maintenance including but not limited to mowing, edging, aerating, watering, leaf and debris removal, turf and planting bed renovations, seeding, sodding, chemical and fertilizer applications, designing, scheduling, and applying standardized industry practices and procedures for the grounds of the College. The manager will also conduct training on all subjects within their department to ensure that all reporting staff remail proficient in latest and proper techniques. The manager is responsible for teaching, and demonstrating the operation and use of equipment such as front end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, zero turn mowers, pesticide sprayers, vehicles, and other grounds and transportation related equipment including game day equipment such as field liners, blowers, and watering cannons.
In the absence of reporting staff and as needed, the manager of grounds will assist staff in completion of work as outlined in the above mentioned areas using the above mentioned equipment.
Communicate daily with College departments (including students, parents, faculty, and staff) to ensure that the highest quality of service is provided by the entire grounds team. Collaborates with other facility departments to establish short- and long-term goals for the grounds team.
Work closely with all departments to provide a clean, safe, secure, and hazard-free campus in compliance with all local, state, and federal codes. Works with Environmental Health and Safety to ensure that in-house and contract staff receive all required occupational safety training (e.g., forklift operation).
Contract management and budgetary oversight - oversee the procurement of goods, services, and maintenance contracts for the grounds department. Ensure the contract language, length of contract, and contract bid prices are adhered to and reflected in the operating budget. Ensure the execution of contract extensions, or the re-bidding process (including any necessary changes) accurately reflect the needs of the College. Monitors, manages, and maintains accurate budgets and records for the assigned areas of responsibility reporting deviances to the Director.
Projects - Assist in the coordination of facilities - related projects to include, but not limited to outside contractors and multiple in-house trades to keep up irrigation, landscaping, concrete, and mechanical.
Perform other duties as assigned
The manager establishes ordering, storage, and delivery policies and maintains inventory records for their respective areas of oversight.
