The Purdy laboratory research focuses on the microbial pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). We use bacterial genetics and biochemistry to explore the pathogenic mechanisms and the basic physiology of M. tuberculosis.
Function/Duties of Position
We are looking for a Research Assistant II who can provide a full range of support, with general supervision, in a laboratory that uses bacteriology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and cell culture assays. Responsibilities include:
Performing laboratory research using molecular biology (nucleic acid isolation and analysis, gene cloning, sequencing); bacteriology (in vitro assays on pathogenic and/or non-pathogenic mycobacteria strains); biochemistry (lipid analysis, protein expression & purification, western blotting); cell culture (maintenance & passage of tissue culture, propagation of cell lines), to meet research goals.
Ordering materials and supplies, inventory, and record keeping.
Contribute to manuscript preparation.
Participate in lab and research group meetings.
Bachelor's degree in any field; OR Associate's degree and 3 years of experience; OR 4 years of relevant experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Organized, motivated, and capable of learning and following scientific protocols and working independently and with a team
Strong communication and oral presentation skills
Ability to prioritize a variety of projects and to independently solve problems
The selected employee must join the OHSU Occupational Health Program including Respiratory Fit-testing and TB testing as well as the National Select Agent Program as necessary including finger-printing for an FBI background check
Must be willing to be vaccinated against various pathogens as required by regulatory agencies and/or the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Employment will depend on these points
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology
1-3 years of experience in molecular biology, microbiology, or immunology
Previous experience leading portions of an independent research project
Priority will be given to candidates with previous experience in bacterial pathogenesis, particularly with BSL3 and/or Select Agent pathogens
