LAB AST 2 (Laboratory Technician - Ji Lab)Department Description
The California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the Primate Center is also committed to its mission of teaching and service.
Job Summary Under general direction of the PI in the Respiratory Research Unit at the California National Primate Research Center, perform lab procedures for molecular biologic and epigenomic research projects in animal models and cell culture.
Duties include performing experiment and data collection, data analysis and preparation of materials for presentations, lab maintenance and training of new personnel. Provide support on research projects as directed by protocols and research goals. On assigned projects, manage data collection and entry; troubleshoot, and recommend new techniques. Maintain cell culture and animals (mouse colonies) for research purposes. Assist in daily lab operation. Assist in data analysis. Perform all work according to Good Laboratory Practices, relevant safety protocols, and requirements of the Animal Welfare Act. Duties will be carried out at the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) in Davis

PHYSICAL DEMANDS - Contact with lab animals such as mice. Handle, move, and transport animals.
- Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level 1 and 2 conditions where cells in culture is treated with chemicals or infected by viral transfection for genetic modification, or work with tissues from non-human primates and mice that may be experimentally treated with exposures such as traffic-related air pollution and smoking or infected with potentially hazardous respiratory diseases such as H1N1 influenza virus.
- Move and lift objects weighting up to 50lbs. Lift and access items located above counter level.
- Perform diversified tasks that may require squatting, kneeling, bending, stooping, or standing up to 8 hours per day.
- Use of biological safety cabinet and hoods as well as daily contact with biohazardous materials.
- Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, lab coats, gloves, masks, face shields, and head covers.
- Use and disposal of hazardous materials and other environmental health and safety procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT - Measles vaccination or documentation of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
- Individual will work routinely with animal and specimens and chemical agents.
- Position requires employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present. In such instances, employee will be required to wear protective clothing for personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
- Must be able to work irregular hours (early mornings, early evening, and/or weekends, as needed). Work occasional weekends and holidays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAdditional Minimum License/Certification: Minimum Education/Experience: - Applied laboratory work experience in Biological Sciences, genomic research, and molecular biology; or the equivalent combination of education, training, and prolonged study and professional technical experience from which comparable skills can be acquired in the area of molecular biology and genomic research.
- Experience in animal models (mouse, etc.)
- Experience and applied knowledge of molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, etc).
- Experience in cell culture related work.
- Experience in laboratory organizational management that includes project coordination and principles of data collection management and research project workflow with strong attention to details.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : - Skills and abilities to learn and work with research laboratory animals.
- Ability to perform tasks within a team, as well as independently. Skills and abilities to be self-directed in the performance of assigned job duties after a training period.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSAdditional Preferred License/Certification: Preferred Education/Experience: - Associate Degree in Biological Sciences genomic research, and molecular biology; or the equivalent combination of education.
- Laboratory experience in handling mice and mice models of airway diseases.
- Experience in working on multidisciplinary projects effectively.
- Experience in safely handling potentially infectious nonhuman primates, tissues, and biological specimens.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : - Strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Skills and knowledge in histology and immunohistochemistry. Skill to prepare tissues for a variety of biochemical assessments.
- Skills and abilities to write reports, data summaries and develop standardize training and testing animal/cell culture models for experiments.
- Knowledge of USDA regulations and AALAS practices and protocols pertaining to mouse and non-human primate animal models. Knowledge of regulations for interstate shipping of biological samples to other labs.
