Function/Duties of Position

This position will work in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) with duties that encompass all missions of OHSU (Oregon Health & Sciences University). EHS oversees/manages programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the OHSU community. EHS encompasses chemical, biosafety, fire/life safety, radiation safety, as well as general safety oversight across the university. Projects and/or responsibilities in other Facilities Program areas may also be assigned.

The Assistant Clinical Radiation Safety Officer will provide EHS services under the direction of department leadership. This is a part of a highly specialized team performing functions required by state and federal Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs). The person in this position participates in all aspects of the Clinical Radiation Safety Program at OHSU. This includes assisting with programs and the activities under the state issued broad scope human use radioactive materials license as consulting on other clinically related radioactive material programs (e.g., non-ionizing radiation) for both direct patient care and studies involving human research subjects. The position may also be asked to assist the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) in program elements. In these capacities, the Clinical Radiation Safety Officer performs duties necessary to ensure the safe use of ionizing, non-ionizing, and laser radiation sources for human use throughout OHSU. Emphasis will be placed on customer service, data management, and collaboration with clinical operations. This position provides safety leadership to the OHSU community by implementing programs and helping OHSU policies and practices conform to federal and state regulations. Additional work may be assigned in identifying, evaluating, controlling and effectively managing the health and safety programs within EHS, and responsibilities will cross over into an integrated clinical/research approach to radiation safety. Projects and/or responsibilities in other program areas may also be assigned.

Responsibilities include:

• Review, collaborate, implement, and monitor the OHSU Clinical Radiation Safety program(s).

Assist with communication between OHSU EHS and the State of Oregon's Radiation Protection Services Section of the Health Division.

• Represents Clinical Radiation Safety Programs at OHSU during applicable regulatory inspections.
• Evaluate, address, and escalate any issues regarding radioactive materials for human use.
• Develop and conduct training, internal inspections/audits, and documented information related to the program requirements.
• Review of clinical trial protocols with human-subject radiation exams and facilitate Clinical Radiation Safety Committee review.
• Direct oversight of the dosimetry program.
• Direct oversight of the x-ray machine inventory and registration process.
• Direct patient care duties as a member of the clinical care team.
• Function as a subject matter expert in radiation safety for workforce members and patients, emergency response, and oversight of ionizing and non-ionizing machines in healthcare.
• Engaging with relevant stakeholders, committees, and quality management systems to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the OHSU community.

The primary work location is the Central Campus, located in Portland, Oregon, but will have a strong focus on the OHSU healthcare operations throughout the Portland area, with some duties within the research and education missions.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Must meet any requirements in Oregon Administrative Rules 333-116-0640
• 3 years of related experience
• Working knowledge of local, state, and Federal radiation safety regulations
• Working knowledge of CMS/accreditation body requirements (e.g., DNV-GL)
• Ability to work with radioactive materials used in a clinical setting
• Ability to communicate effectively with regulators and a wide variety of audiences in the clinical setting
• Skilled in the use of radiation measuring devices
• Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
• Experience responding to a variety of incidents, questions, and exercises on an on-call and after-hours basis
• Eligible to obtain and maintain applicable/related certification
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree focused on radiation safety or equivalent
• Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer in a clinical setting
• Experience in an Academic Medical Center
• Extensive knowledge of local, state, and Federal radiation safety regulations
• Specific knowledge of policies and programs and applicability to this institution
• Current applicable/related certification
