Research Data Analyst 3 -EHSC - SOM: Public Health SciencesDepartment Description
The Department of Public Health Sciences is a large, complex teaching and research department in the UC Davis School of Medicine. Our mission is to improve the health of people through population-based approaches by carrying out educational programs, epidemiologic research, public service, and policy development.
Within the Department of Public Health Sciences, a range of epidemiologic studies are being conducted on environmental factors that influence disease and development. Several studies are examining both the immediate effects of wildfires and their long-term consequences on health, both physical and mental. And also addressing disparities by race, ethnicity and sex. The WHAT-Now-CA? study, for example has enrolled thousands of households and will continue to follow the cohort for effects from multiple fire exposures, with special investigations of vulnerable subgroups. Another study is B-SAFE, (BioSpecimen And Fire Effects) which has enrolled several hundred mothers who were pregnant during the fires, and will look for impacts on the offspring's respiratory health and neurodevelopment. .
During COVID, numerous surveys were implemented to capture ways in which workplace influenced people jobs, health and risks. Additional studies on child neurodevelopment are evaluating environmental exposures such as pesticides, plasticizers and air pollution and their interactions with genes. These include CHARGE (CHildhood Autism Risk from Genes & Environment), ReCHARGE (Revisiting CHARGE participants) and MARBLES (Markers of Autism Risk in Babies-Learning Early Signs). All of these studies are ongoing and also have historical data and biologic specimens that are useful in identifying molecular markers and helping illuminate mechanisms.
