Occupational Health has an immediate opening for a full-time, experienced, punctual, registered nurse to directly care for a diverse population of Washington University employees, including physicians and staff for onboarding new hires, ongoing medical surveillance, or illness.
Job Description
This position may require travel to off campus hospital locations for various Occupational Health initiatives.Â
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Contributes to the promotion of injury prevention and health surveillance related to actual and potential hazards in the work environment.
- Conducts investigation of employee post exposure to blood or body fluids, COVID and other infectious diseases, provides contact tracing and counseling for post exposure incidents.
- Works as rotating nurse on call for occasional urgent needs, outside of normal business hours.
- Refers employee illness and injury visits to appropriate department as applicable for further evaluation.
- Facilitates the safe and expedient return of employees to work using sound clinical judgement and best practice guidelines to determine their fitness for service.
- Conducts new hire or annual health screening to direct or provide immunizations, testing and medical surveillance for wide variety of employee occupations.
- Skillful and precise in performing venipunctures. Performs routine or specialized procedures such as nasopharyngeal swabs. Administers vaccines, using IM and subcutaneous injection techniques.
- Must process knowledge of medications and nursing assessments.
- Identifies emergency situations and provides care within legal scope of practice.
- Collaborates with a medical assistant to provide care.
- Assists in the setting up and provides supervision for vaccination clinics. Provides vaccine education to all staff prior to administration of vaccinations.
- Directs clinic flow. Answers questions and provides education to employees regarding treatment, Occupational Health initiatives or university policy.
- Assesses minor injuries, performs first aid, cleanses and dresses wounds, obtains vital signs.
Communication and Documentation
- Communicates professionally at all times, greeting and assisting those who call or visit Occupational Health.
- Assesses the employeeâ™s ability to receive education and uses appropriate tools and techniques.
- Courteous interpersonal skills to work with internal and external individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and prioritization skills are needed.
- Maintains confidentiality with all care, familiar with HIPAA regulations.
- Routes phone messages, questions, and email communications to appropriate personnel.
- Assists with care coordination by doing tasks outlined under the department guidelines, including scheduling of appointments and follow-up appointments.
- Documents clinical data in employeeâ™s electronic medical record.
Other Functions
- Maintains required HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies and participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, according to established standards and Washington University policies.
- Complies with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standards.
- Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
- Follows infection prevention procedures.
- Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Two years of Registered Nursing work in a hospital, office, or school nursing environment.
- A high level of independence, and critical assessment and decision-making skills, similar to those of a senior-level nurse clinician, is essential.Â
- Ability to conduct day-to-day operations with minimal supervision and able to act under pre-established policies, procedures and guidelines, following up on all relevant issues. Able to function in new and emergent situations.
- Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques which may include care and treatment of psychiatry clients
- Knowledge of medical and psychological terminology.
- Knowledge of medications which may include psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients.
- Knowledge of regulations pertaining to psychiatric nursing and knowledge of trauma-informed care.
- Knowledge of symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill patients and medical and psychiatric emergency procedures.
- Able to apply professional nursing care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of departmental clients.
- Able to develop interpersonal therapeutic relationships with departmental clients.
- Able to comply with state laws, rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures.
- Professional judgment to ascertain and to apply appropriate intervention techniques with clients in crisis with sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
- Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current Missouri RN licensure in accordance with Compact Act.
- Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Salary Range
$49,800.00 - $89,700.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
