The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the University of Washington School of Public Health has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator in Seattle, Washington to support a growing portfolio of applied, policy-relevant research about the health impacts of disasters, pandemics and climate change, and policy and programmatic solutions to build resilience. The Research Coordinator will coordinate and support a variety of health-related disaster and climate change research activities, as well as research and evaluation projects related to occupational and environmental health more generally. Specifically, the Research Coordinator will support grant writing and preparation of grant materials, serve as a project manager for several active research, evaluation, and public health practice projects, collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and participate in the dissemination of study findings. They will also coordinate lab meetings and administrative activities. The Research Coordinator will interact with and coordinate a variety of stakeholders, including community partners, public health and emergency management practitioners, and academic collaborators located across the world. They will be responsible for coordinating and contributing a variety of projects simultaneously. Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving abilities, as well as meticulous attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively are critical to the success of this position.
In the coming years, disasters and extreme events resulting from climate change are expected to increase in frequency and magnitude. We require innovative, science-driven solutions to minimize the potential for devastating consequences to human health and wellbeing. Addressing climate change and its human impacts, as well as furthering humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, have been identified as two of the University of Washington’s Population Health Initiative's Strategic Areas. Through research and community engagement, this position will work to advance the science and practice of resilience to both disasters and climate change.
The researcher will join a growing team dedicated to policy-relevant, community-driven research on the health impacts of climate change and extreme events, as well as policy and programmatic solutions designed to build resilience. The Research Coordinator will support grant writing and research study and evaluation design, develop plans, tools, and training for public health emergency preparedness and response practice, provide project management leadership, collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, support the preparation of research-related publications and presentations, and provide general support to the lab. Specific responsibilities include:
Research Study Design and Grant Preparation:
The Coordinator will work with faculty, staff and students to plan and design research and evaluation projects competitive for intramural and extramural funding. They will draft grant materials, including research strategies, budgets, and supporting documentation. They will work with faculty and staff to prepare and submit grant materials in compliance with University of Washington and sponsor timelines and requirements.
The Coordinator will lead project management activities for several research and evaluation projects, including developing and monitoring project timelines, ensuring work is successfully executed and completed within time frames to meet research objectives, and coordinating and communicating with diverse academic and community stakeholders. They will work with supervising faculty to identify and address problems and issues. They will oversee and assemble progress/interim reporting, communicate with funding agencies; submit project deliverables; and develop and monitor project budgets, including subcontracts.
Implement Research and Practice Activities:
The Coordinator will support the implementation of research and public health emergency preparedness and response practice projects, including plan, training and tool development, and the collection, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data. The Coordinator may participate in the mentoring of undergraduate or graduate students involved in research and evaluation projects as part of their academic endeavors. They will assist with IRB related activities including submissions, approvals, modifications, and renewals.
Dissemination of Findings:
The Coordinator will contribute to manuscript development and report writing. They will prepare meeting summaries, progress reports, study deliverables, journal articles, and other written materials, and present study findings at meetings as needed.
Administration and Operations:
The Coordinator will contribute to management of team activities, including managing web and social media activities, purchasing and procurement, coordination of travel and study meetings as needed, addressing administrative or logistical issues experienced by other lab staff and student researchers, and scheduling and coordination of lab or project meetings.
Master’s Degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Environmental Science,
Planning or related field and two years of relevant experience.
Familiarity with disaster and climate change-related health impacts and resilience-promoting policies/programs
Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis and software
Knowledge and experience with project management, including developing timelines and work plans
Familiarity with human subjects research regulations and guidelines
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate across groups
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a busy environment with competing priorities
Proficient with Microsoft Office
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
