Title: Biology/Biotech Laboratory Technician

General Summary: Provide technical support services to faculty and staff who teach biology or biotechnology courses and maintain a sanitary and efficient laboratory environment under the supervision of the Biology/Biotech Laboratory Coordinator and Science Department Chair.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare materials and set up all laboratory experiments in Biotechnology and the biological sciences accurately and on time
• Dismantle laboratory experiments in a timely manner
• Maintain the order, cleanliness, and safety of the laboratories and storage facilities 
• Clean glassware and other equipment and supplies from laboratory experiments, and autoclaves biohazard waste
• Make recommendations for equipment repair and replacements
• Assists in maintaining an inventory of all supplies, materials and equipment. ensuring availability of adequate biological course supplies, live materials, and other supplies to perform laboratory activities
• Provide assistance or instruction to faculty in use of biology and biotechnology devices and equipment as needed
• Willing to learn new biotechnology devices and update the current practical manual 
• Conduct the proper disposal of all laboratory waste, including biohazardous material, coordinating with college Environmental Health and Safety Officer
• Follow OSHA safety procedures and maintain files of current MSDS sheets
• Collaborate with other science technicians to ensure appropriate disposal of chemical and biological waste
• Other duties as assigned 

• Minimum bachelor's degree in a life science or AS in Biotechnology technician or Medical Technology and 1-year experience.
• Successful laboratory experience and experience in working in a life science laboratory
• Knowledge of general laboratory techniques
• Experience in preparing microbiological media and/or cultures utilizing proper aseptic transfer and inoculation techniques from various sources such as slants, plates, lyophilized disks, broths etc.
• Some experience in using an autoclave.
• Some experience in using and maintenance biotechnology devices (incubator, waterbath, inverted microscope, pipette aid, micropipette, flowcytometer, HPLC, bioreactor, biosafety cabinet among other).
• Ability to prepare standard laboratory solutions
• Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation and veterans including those with different levels of academic preparation, varying physical and learning abilities. 

This is a part-time, non-unit, non-benefitted position. The employee will work 18.5 hours per week and will be appointed on an annual basis every July 1st. 

Salary Range: $21.50 per hour in accordance with Middlesex Community College's Part-Time Wage Schedule

Location: Lowell Campus with occasional travel to Bedford as needed

Hours: 18.5 per week

Expected start date: August 2022
