Completes painting and staining assignments to appropriately maintain and renovate campus facilities. Responsible for accomplishing work of a specialized nature and a variety of special projects. Evaluates the specific needs of each job, performs necessary specialty repairs. Performs more complex techniques/methods utilized in the painting trade to achieve the desired finish on surfaces. Performs surface preparation and painting/staining/varnishing duties, as required, to complete work orders in a timely manner.
Minimum Requirements
Tenth grade education and experience in the painting trade. Must be able to complete records and paperwork associated with work orders. A valid SC driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment, as the employee will be required to drive state vehicles to transport equipment and/or personnel. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Position requires basic computer skills and working knowledge and experience in using e-mail. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) is preferred. Experience in utilizing on-line work order systems is a plus. Skill with electronic devices such as iPhone and iPad is preferred. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. All employees at the College are expected to perform their jobs in a safe manner in accordance with best safety practices as prescribed by their department, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration training as provided by Facilities Management at the College of Charleston.
Must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions. Knowledge of and ability to use and maintain tools of the painting trade, such as, paint brushes, paint guns and sprayers, compressors, scaffolding, scrapers, power sanders, pressure washers, extension rollers, etc.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be able to perform duties as described and work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to work in close quarters, climb ladders/stairs, enter/exit hatches, and work on rooftops. Must be able to work in areas of excessive heat/cold and lift or move furniture, objects, heavy components, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overtime and call back work is required after normal working hours and on weekends as needed. May be required to be on campus prior to and immediately following all emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, snow/ice storms, etc.

1. Primes, paints, varnishes and stains a variety of different surfaces as directed by the supervisor or assistant supervisor. Uses appropriate care and skill to ensure that the historic nature of historic facilities are protected and maintained.

2. Uses paint removers or paint cutting chemicals to remove stains and old paint, as needed, on items such as furniture. Uses neutralizers to prepare woods for paint or stain. Ensures the application of stain or paint is appropriate to achieve desired result and match other furnishings if necessary. Practices and promotes proper safety procedures to include proper disposal and storage of paint, sealers and chemicals. Consistently wears/uses personal protective equipment as required by OSHA safety regulations to ensure protection from chemicals, paint, solvents, etc.

5. Demonstrates safety knowledge by practicing and adhering to all proper safety procedures and OSHA regulations pertaining to the Painting trade. Consistently wears/uses appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Responsible for ensuring that furniture, floors, walls, and surrounding work area is protected from dust and debris while work is being performed. Also responsible for ensuring that all job sites are thoroughly cleaned when work has been completed.
