The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Genetic Counselor  to perform a combined research (75% effort) and clinical (25% effort) Genetic Counseling position with option to flex effort between research and clinical work as allowed per funding. Must be willing to work within Pediatric/Adult General Genetics Clinics and support cancer genetics research. Particular interest in and experience with evidence-based research to describe new disease patterns and establish guidelines for Genetic Counseling.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The counselor's responsibilities will include the following duties; note that this list is not exhaustive and may be somewhat flexible after 1-2 years on the job depending on the experience and interest of the hired candidate:

Research (75%) – Supported by Dr. Mary Armanios in the Department of Oncology

• Research-focused with opportunity to describe new disease patterns and establish guidelines for genetic counseling
• Participate in recruitment of families and gene discovery efforts
• Establish clinical research workflows for new area of cancer genetics research
• Work in a vibrant environment to learn and educate other students and clinicians
• May be opportunities to see clinical patients in the Telomere clinic under Dr. Mary Armanios as part of the 75% effort in Oncology

Clinical (25%) – Supported by the Department of Genetic Medicine (DGM), Center for Genetic Counseling

• Provide independent, direct genetic counseling
• Review medical records to determine possible genetic testing options and, for the general genetics clinic, to determine the appropriate geneticist to see the patient
• Assist in the management of the general genetics clinic workflows and/or specialty clinics that our Genetic Counselors serve
• Coordinate clinical genetic testing that may be available for patients including informed consent, lab requisition forms, and letters of medical necessity
• Communicate test results to physicians and patients, often as a follow-up face to face visit
• Work effectively within a health care team comprising physicians, PA/NP, nurses, nutritionist, support staff, and 9 Clinical Genetic Counselors
• Respond to inquiries related to genetic testing/counseling services from health care professionals, patients, and the public
• Participate in DGM educational activities, which can include giving lectures to current and future health care professionals and supervising genetic counseling students and residents

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

• Master's degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within two years of hire date. Must maintain certification by completion of the required CEUs for the period prescribed by the Board. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Successful completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

* Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date. 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in general pediatric and adult genetics clinic is preferred. 
• Experience performing research related to genetic disease and genetic counseling is preferred. 
• Knowledge of cancer genetics is preferred plus.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

• ABGC Board eligibility required.     
• Board certification a plus but will be required within 2 years of employment.

Physical Requirements:

• Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
• Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
• Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard.
• Communication skills using the spoken word.
• Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
• Ability to move about workspace.

Supervisory Responsibility:

• None but supervises the work of students and residents – no authority to hire, fire or discipline.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
