Job Summary: The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Will evaluate, select, and apply standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. May be involved in various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports.

Additional Department Summary: The Solid State Additive Manufacturing Technician (SSAMT) manages the cold spray and additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) capabilities. Executes research experiments using these technologies in the College of Engineering and specifically in support of the metallurgical and mechanical engineering departments. Ensures that these two, solid state additive manufacturing processes remain in a safe and operational condition. Trains students and other researchers on the correct and safe operation of this equipment. Conducts research in support of funded research programs. Analyzes data generated and writes summary report of results. Ensures Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies and protocols are adhered to.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and three years of experience; OR Master's degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and one (1) year of experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: This position requires an individual that is either a US citizen or a US permanent resident due to the restrictions of the research sponsor.

Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to safely operate research instrumentation. Ability to train and supervise others using research instrumentation. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Basic knowledge of materials science and engineering.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with cold spray deposition, thermal spray deposition, friction stir welding, or other welding techniques is highly preferred. Experience with laboratory safety. Hands-on experience with electrical and/or mechanical systems.
