The Highlights
The Laboratory/Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring that the department's teaching and research operations are carried out in a safe and efficient manner. This position will control the department's chemical inventory, waste collection and processing, provide proper chemical hygiene instruction to faculty, staff, and students, and serve as a liaison to Risk Management/Environmental Health and Safety. The Laboratory/Safety Manager will see that teaching laboratories are prepared, safe, and operational before the start of each session, and serves as the direct supervisor of student workers that carry out logistical operations in support of that effort. This position also provides administrative support for the department's student worker program. The Laboratory/Safety Manager also retains purchasing authority in support of the functions described above. This position reports directly to the Chair of the department who may assign other duties as needed.

Is This You?

• Oversees lab chemical inventory, waste disposal, and laboratory safety.
  
• Prepares laboratory for Chemistry lab courses, including chemical reagents preparations. 25%Recruit, hires, and supervises student lab workers.
  
• Develops and implements protocols to ensure safe use of all teaching and research labs. Trains users, including faculty and students, on lab safety protocols. Handles emergency situations such as chemical spills, personal injury during labs, etc.
  
• Purchases specialized lab supplies, equipment, and general departmental supplies. Performs other duties assigned by Chair.
  
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Your Education

• This position requires a minimum of a Bachelors degree, Chemistry preferred

Required Certifications/Licenses

• This position does not require any specific certificates or licenses. Certification in safety-related issues is a plus.

Managerial Responsibilities

• The Laboratory Manager has the authority to hire and schedule student workers who are responsible for laboratory logistical operations within the constraints of the budget alloted for such workers. This position refers decisions to hire beyond budgetary limits to the Chair. Complex disciplinary measures are also expected to be referred to the Chair. The average number of direct reports is approximately five, but can vary from quarter to quarter depending on the number of scheduled laboratory sections and the availability of student workers. Approximately 10% of the Lab Manger's time is spent on supervisory duties.

Financial Responsibilities

• The Laboratory/Safety Manager has the authority to execute purchases in support of teaching laboratory and safety operations. This position also has the responsibility to see that the student worker budget caps are not exceeded. In all, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for about 50% of the department's overall laboratory budget.

Other Skills & Abilities Required

• This position requires the movement of supplies and equipment that routinely exceed 50 pounds, including 240 liter liquid nitrogen dewars and 55 gallon drums.
• A general knowledge of personal computer operations is expected as well as a familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
