ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (EHS) COORDINATOR, Koch Institute (KI) for Integrative Cancer Research, to monitor day-to-day operational activities to ensure compliance with EHS laws and regulations and MIT's EHS management system (EHS-MS). Will collect and review lab-specific training documents/outlines and SOPs, ensuring new SOPs are written for new experiments/chemicals; share best practices; and actively participate in KI renovation and construction projects. Responsibilities include overseeing implementation of the EHS-MS; monitoring departmental compliance with EHS laws/regulations and MIT best practices; recognizing and understanding potential hazards and issues and contacting the EHS Office for assistance as needed; working with the MIT EHS Office to assure that requirements are satisfied; enrolling new principal investigators/supervisors in the EHS-MS and discussing roles and responsibilities; supporting efforts to effectively implement EHS-MS requirements; developing, updating, and ensuring compliance with KI EHS policies/procedures/programs; communicating and disseminating information about the EHS-MS; escalating EHS-MS issues as appropriate to ensure resolution; actively seeking approaches/methods/techniques to reduce or avoid the use of hazardous materials; supervising the day-to-day activities of EHS technologist; and participating on Institute-wide working committees and special projects.
REQUIRED: bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in an EHS-related discipline, engineering, science, and/or related professional discipline; involvement with laboratory/research processes; professional EHS certification; four years' relevant EHS compliance experience; excellent organizational, administrative, follow-through, and problem-solving skills; self-motivation; flexibility; ability to set and achieve priorities, work in teams and motivate groups, and multitask in a fast-paced work environment with changing priorities and limited supervision; attention to detail and accuracy; tact and good judgment with and ability to communicate clearly across a broad client base; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and ability to learn specialized EHS applications.
