The department of Neurology is seeking a Research Specialist. This laboratory studies mitochondrial biology as it applies to the process of muscle aging. A focus of the laboratory to understand how mitochondrial DNA deletions and mutations arise in health and disease. The responsibilities of the individual in this position will be include setting up a new lab, independently pursue new projects as well as work collaboratively with others on ongoing projects. The individual will interact with undergraduate students who work part time. In addition to performing laboratory experiments, ongoing responsibilities will include laboratory experiments, the management of a specimen bank (including serum and fibroblast lines), the performance of animal treatment, behavioral testing, and the ordering of laboratory supplies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Biomolecular Methods and nucleic acid isolation Laboratory experiments (real time PCR, genotyping, tissue histology western blot, RT-qPCR , immunohistological staining, and confocal microscopy)
• Mouse colony management. 
• Tissue bank maintenance. 
• Administrative duties (ordering, equipment maintenance etc). 
• Regulatory and Biosafety Compliance.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Experience with transgenic mice and PCR is helpful.

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
• One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
• Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred.
