Multidisciplinary vision laboratory seeks a Research Specialist to help coordinate and perform research that characterizes and improves outcomes of primary cell culture from several ophthalmic issues, including glaucoma disease.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for inventory, culture, proliferation, and classifying primary cell tissue in culture.
Confocal and multiphoton microscopy of immunohistochemically studies of explanted mouse or human ocular tissues.
Perform various glaucoma model and optic nerve ophthalmic surgeries and intraocular injections in mice and rats, preparing and dosing animals in drug studies, measuring intraocular pressures via rebound tonometry, using injectable and/or gas anesthetics via commercial rodent anesthesia machine in accordance with USDA and AALAC.
Histological methods performed in this position include cryopreservation and epoxy preparation (embedding and sectioning) and subsequent immunohistochemically and/or morphologic studies of animal and human donor tissues.
Image capture, reconstruction, and data analysis for morphologic study using Imaris, ImageJ, Neurolucinda, and Metamorph software.
Management of multiple mouse lines, including tailing and PCR for genotyping and maintaining database of mouse lines.
Execute proper disposal of biohazardous materials, maintain laboratory conditions and other duties as assigned by lab manager.
Prepare and carry out perfusion fixation of rats or mice, with micro-dissection of ocular and/or brain tissues.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
This position requires working with rodents on a frequent basis.
Those candidates with pre-existing allergies to rodents or cats and/or have asthma will be unsuitable for this job.

1 year experience in a cell biology, molecular biology or neuroscience laboratory performing relevant techniques is desired.
Histology, animal surgery and microdissection, immunofluorescence microscopy, and confocal microscopy desired.
