We are seeking a Research Specialist II who will work on funded projects related to the study of the mechanisms and target identification for Huntington's Disease and will provide lab support for ongoing clinical studies for HD. Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, the research specialist works independently to carry-out research experiments, involving a range of sophisticated assays using modern molecular biology, protein biochemistry and cell biology techniques. Makes significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. Executes independent decision making and trouble-shooting during experiments and participates in designing new methodologies. Utilizes specialized knowledge to interpret results and participates in planning new experimental approaches towards research goals. Uses scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions. Makes scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity. Collaborates in development of new techniques and instruments. Applies published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI. Contributes scientifically to writing of manuscripts and grants. Processes analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
Laboratory management includes tracking supply inventories, placing orders, reimbursements, interface with vendors, laboratory organization, upkeep, and compliance with safety regulations. Equipment maintenance, upkeep, and organization of usage. Works with instrument field applications specialists and engineers to ensure equipment functions properly. Giving recommendations towards purchasing of new equipment and reagents. Teaches/trains students and new technicians in the lab. Guides, directs and facilitates problem solving for entry level lab members on day-to-day basis. Laboratory management also includes organization of use of equipment by investigators, organization of freezer space, hoods and incubators; maintenance of an efficient laboratory configuration for investigators and proactive attention to the needs of investigators for laboratory resources.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for assigned on-going research projects.
Perform data generation using techniques such as PCR, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, biochemical protein purification, tissue preparation and analysis, cell culture and transfection.
Provides lab support for clinical research studies which involved processing of human blood and CSF samples and following specific research/clinical protocols.
Use of highly sophisticated techniques, equipment and reagents to perform experiments.
Quality control of the different protocols performed to ensure high standards of experimentation.
Use analytical and programming software, e.g. DNA analysis and proteomics software, to interpret results, make conclusions, and perform quality control tests.
Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret and evaluate results, present results at the lab meetings and participates in the preparation of manuscripts and grants.
Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions.
Apply original thought to make decisions with the PI.
Make intellectual contributions to scientific research.
Develop, design, and manage substantial research projects and coordinate own objectives.
Order equipment and supplies, interface with vendors, maintains equipment.
Assist with trouble-shooting and problem solving.
Performs clinical laboratory procedures for human clinical research studies according to Good Clinical Practice and Good Laboratory Practice, with rigorous adherence to protocols and documentation, and flexible accommodation and re-prioritization of basic lab work duties due to changing clinical schedules and priorities.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
