Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Services Manager for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, in conjunction with the Attending Veterinarian, this position leads a team that provides exceptional veterinary care across Rutgers campuses. The Veterinary Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing the veterinary technical staff on the Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway (NB/P), and Camden campuses and supervises veterinary technicians who provide technical support to veterinarians and veterinary residents, in caring for a wide range of animal species.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Serves as liaison between veterinary technicians and senior leadership to facilitate seamless communication.
Performs administrative duties, reviews workload/tasking, and manages scheduling for all veterinary staff.
Supervises and schedules animal treatments, diagnostic laboratory procedures, periodically assists in or performs surgery.
Works with Principal Investigators (PI) to establish budgets, resources, and technical service needs for research support.
Manages inventory of consumables.
Serves as a university Controlled Substance Unit Coordinator as needed.
This is a leadership position with the additional responsibility of ensuring a positive work environment in which the department achieves its goals.
Manages recordkeeping of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) species records and animal health and surgical records. Maintains and updates Veterinary SOP's.
Schedules retraining and review when necessary. Expected Outcomes: Animal acquisition, disposition and health records are kept to USDA standards. Veterinary SOP's are reviewed and updated on a routine basis
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree with emphasis in veterinary technology or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Five years' practical experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience required with solid experience of supervising vet technicians.
Must be proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Must have a broad knowledge of various animal species, as well as all aspects of laboratory animal medicine within a university or industrial setting.
Possesses strong collaborative skills, customer-oriented skills, and possess effective communication skills. Must be well organized, strong work ethic, drive, proactiveness, and ability to execute multi-task activities.
Veterinary clinical and administrative practice experience, such as in a small animal hospital, is essential for this position, including but not limited to extensive knowledge of medication administration, blood draws on various species, surgical preparation, intubation and catheter placement.
Laboratory animal experience is also essential to this position.
Must have full range of body movement. Must have correctable vision so as to observe animals for signs of illness and evaluate animal rooms and equipment for compliance with applicable standards.
Must communicate well in English and have excellent written and verbal skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Veterinary Technician License in any state (LVT, CVT, RVT).
Experience with developing Standard Operating Procedures and training staff.
CMAR and/or ILAM certification is a plus.
Experience with preparing a facility for an Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC ) site visit.
Survival surgery skills and knowledge of anesthetic procedures.
