The Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Medicine is seeking a Critical Care Medicine Senior Critical Care Physician Assistant work with attending physicians, residents, nurses, respiratory therapists, and others to provide patient care in various intensive care units, including surgical, burn, and neuro. Applicants must be willing to work on a rotating schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening/night shifts, as required to meet 24/7 patient care needs.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Works independently with supervision and medical direction by Critical Care Attending Physicians.
Coordinates patient care provided by a multi-disciplinary team of specialty care practitioners.
Obtains medical histories and perform physical examinations.
Orders and interprets laboratory tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic studies.
Interprets information from invasive and non-invasive monitors.
Initiates or modifies routine, complex, and emergent medication regimens and therapies.
Performs emergent, urgent, and routine procedures, if credentialed to do so:
Inserts peripheral and central venous catheters
Inserts pulmonary artery catheters
Inserts temporary trans venous cardiac pacemakers
Inserts chest tubes or performs a thoracentesis
Performs conscious IV sedation
Inserts peripheral arterial catheters
Controls external hemorrhage Inserts Oral or Naso-gastric tubes
Assists with tracheal intubation, cricothyroid ostomy, tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)
Assumes responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff, and departmental needs.
Serves as an educational and clinical resource to nursing and multi-disciplinary staff as well as to patients and their families.
Provides leadership, guidance, and teaching to the junior NP/PA staff, PA and medical students, as well as residents rotating in the units.
Assists NP/PA manager with formulation of PA policies within the ACCM department and other administrative matters. Serves as a sub-investigator for clinical trials.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree, certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body.
Completion of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program are required. Must be licensed as a PA in the state of Maryland.
Minimum of three years' experience in acute/critical care setting, and obtained proficiency in area of critical care. Five years of experience is preferred.
Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Current CPR and ACLS certifications. Must maintain license to practice and certifications during duration of employment.
Completion of the JHH and BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Applicants must have advanced clinical skills and have demonstrated the ability to apply theoretical concepts as part of a multi- disciplinary health care team providing care to patients and their families.
Ability to diagnose patients and to implement a medical care plan for the long and short-term care of acute and chronic health conditions in the intensive care unit. Position requires the ability to:
Apply critical-thinking and problem solving skills to function effectively and adapt to a dynamic and often changing work environment
Apply evidence-based decision-making when assessing and treating patients
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Collaborate with other services, other units, and other departments
Function with minimal supervision within the scope of their practice as part of the critical care team Teach and mentor junior staff and rotating house-staff
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
