Open Rank Faculty Position in Technical Design and Production / Technical Director

Reporting to the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale/Yale Repertory Theatre (DGSD/YRT) Chair of Technical Design and Production (TD&P) program/Director of Production, teach classes in technical production; advise, train, and supervise students of David Geffen School of Drama. Reporting to the DGSD/YRT Production Manager, advising and supervising TD&P students and associated production work.
Teaching and Mentoring
Teach two (2) courses per semester in technical production as assigned by the Chair of the TD&P department, including but not limited to Automation, Mechanical Design, Shop Technology, Rigging, Production Drafting, Technical Design or Structural Design or area of expertise.
In concert with the Chair and faculty of TD&P program, participate in ongoing development of curriculum.
In concert with Chair and faculty of the TD&P program, mentor technical directors and stage carpenters assigned to Geffen School productions.
Serve as advisor for graduate student theses, as assigned by Chair of TD&P program.
Supervise and evaluate the work of graduate students and interns.
Occasional travel out of state for conferences and training.
Other duties as requested by the Chair of TD&P program.
Departmental Administration and Recruiting
Attend weekly faculty meetings.
In concert with the Chair and faculty of TD&P program, participate in the admissions process for incoming students.
As requested by the Chair of TD&P program, attend recruitment functions.
Participate in TD&P program committee work as assigned by the Chair of the TD&P program and School committee work as assigned by the Dean.
Production Responsibilities and Supervision
Collaborate with Production Supervisor to achieve and maintain high artistic and managerial standards for Geffen School thesis productions.
Oversee, supervise and schedule one Staff Carpenter, as well as casual, and
work-study labor assigned to work on Geffen School thesis productions. Oversee other staff as needed.
Collaborate with graduate student and guest scenic designers in the development of preliminary and final scenery, properties and run-crew budgets for Geffen School thesis productions.
Supervise and mentor student technical direction and run-crew work on Geffen School thesis productions by participating in activities including but not limited to, budget and production meetings, oversight of planning, build and load-in phases; attendance at selected rehearsals, technical rehearsals, previews, note sessions, strike and subsequent seminars.
In cooperation with fellow faculty Technical Directors, develop, oversee, monitor and expend the following budgets: Stage and shop equipment; stage and shop maintenance and repair; shop and blueprint/plotter expendables.
In cooperation with fellow faculty Technical Directors, assure the adequate supply of materials and expendables needed to create scenery for DGSD/YRT productions.
Maintain complete, accurate and timely production budgets and financial records.
Collaborate with appropriate department heads concerning Geffen School productions.
In cooperation with fellow faculty Technical Directors, establish scenery shop priorities, policies, rules and deadlines.
Collaborate with the Director of Theatre Safety and Occupational Health regarding health and safety aspects of the School productions, including oversight of audience and fire safety.
In cooperation with fellow faculty Technical Directors, and in conjunction with graduate students, scenery shop personnel and interns, maintain the safety and efficiency of all shop operations.
May serve as Technical Director on Geffen School or Yale Rep productions or other projects.
Supervise cleanup of the scenery shops as needed.
Will work nights and weekends as required by the production calendar.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT
Appointment will be as an Assistant Professor Adjunct/Associate Professor Adjunct/Professor in the Practice depending on qualifications for a renewable term of three years beginning July 1, 2022.
