We are seeking a LAN Administrator II who will enable the Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) to use best practices and efficient maintenance strategies with regards to machines on the Linux platform. The position reports to the IT Director of WSE IT, but will be a highly skilled resource available to all users and IT staff across WSE.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Provide consulting, advice, training, and assistance to several hundred users across WSE departments, primarily faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, with some graduate and undergraduate students.
Provide consulting, advice, training, and assistance to peer IT technicians.
Collaborate with peer IT technicians and engineers from WSE to integrate new technologies for faculty, staff, and students.
Collaborate with external vendors on software products and technology solutions.
Support a diverse set of needs for research, administrative and instructional computing.
Install New Linux Systems
Work with customers to determine system requirements for sizing, services, network access.
Perform initial installation and software configuration.
Configure network and authentication.
Determine and implement backup strategy.
Reconfigure, Maintain, & Troubleshoot.
Maintain applications, libraries, and compilers.
Use scripting to automate monitoring, maintenance, and security tasks.
Investigate service requests that require technical understanding across a variety of IT disciplines (networking, operating systems, and applications) and resolve the issue or escalate appropriately to different teams based on findings.
Systems Analysis, Design & Implementation
Lead projects creating the supporting infrastructure for future Linux-based servers, including software distribution, security, remote access, fault-tolerance and disaster recovery, and backup.
Configure templates for the WSE IT VMWare-based private cloud for Linux VMs.
Maintain the school's software license servers.
Act as backup website administrator when primary web administrator is unavailable.
Document systems and processes for customers and for IT staff
Interface with Hopkins IT for supporting services such as virtual machine hosting, network security, storage, and authentication.
Interface with IT people outside WSE IT to monitor / support their use of Linux technologies.
Monitor the Linux industry landscape by reading related publications and attending conferences.

Requires Special Skills
Deep knowledge of the architectures and packaging mechanisms for several prominent Linux distributions (CentOS/Redhat and Ubuntu required).
Strong understanding of system software, networking, file systems, and security configuration on Linux systems.
Understanding of performing root cause analysis of system failures and security breaches.
Broad understanding of fundamental IT principles that result in maintainable, secure systems supporting a wide array of applications.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, ability to support customers of all sorts (students to deans, non-technical to experts). Preferred skills
Relevant certifications in Linux technologies or IT security a plus.
Two years college coursework.
Three years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
