The laboratory of Jonathan Coulter, PhD, MHS is seeking a driven Research Technologist to play a role in a variety of projects ongoing in the laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to have a basic set of research laboratory skills with the interest in developing and becoming proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques. The position will report to Dr. Coulter on a day-to-day basis.
Utilizing standard procedures and developed laboratory protocols, the position will be required to run lab tests and complete measurements as assigned. With direction from Dr. Coulter and assistance from other lab members as necessary, the research technologist will be expected to set-up experiments based on defined standards, the collection of project data, analyzing and interpreting results, making conclusions based on the collected data, and designing follow-up experiments. The position will require the use of basic scientific knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and/or new techniques/methods. While many aspects of the position's duties will utilize standard laboratory tasks and/or the completion routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures, some of the ongoing projects in the lab are currently developing new techniques or ways to use current technology in our research. Additionally, they will be expected to gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
The research technologist will also play a role in experiments/projects that utilize animal models. This role will include both project specific animal procedures as well as assisting with maintaining the lab's own mouse colonies. Any required training for this aspect of the job will be provided by the laboratory or through resources available at the University.
As a staff member of the research team, the position may also be asked to prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment, and/or ordering of research/laboratory supplies. An interest in helping train and direct students in the laboratory for rotations or summer projects is highly desired, though not required.
The laboratory is part of a team of collaborating scientists in numerous departments, and seeks to leverage this collective expertise to make an impact on understanding and treating cancers. Therefore, the research technologist will play an important role in the Coulter Laboratory, but will also work within a greater team of highly collaborative and engaging physicians and researchers.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures.
Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab.
Gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience. Run lab tests and complete measurements assigned.
Identify and resolves common problems involved in routine research assays.
Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.
Set-up experiments based on defined standards. Collect project data. Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment.
Maintains manual of procedures for study/studies.
Will be tasked to assist in studies involving small animal models.
May be tasked to help in the acquisition and initial processing of clinical samples
Ordering supplies and equipment internal and external to the University
Maintaining safety compliance
Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
