We are seeking a Finacial Analyst for the Office of the Dean – Financial Affairs, more commonly referred to as the School of Medicine (SOM) Business Office is comprised of four teams; Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), Finance and Reporting, Front Office Operations and Student Accounts. The Business Office is responsible for managing all financial aspects of an estimated $2 billion revenue organization to include financial analyses (routine and ad-hoc) and accounting in support of the Dean, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Vice Deans of the School of Medicine. The school has consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the country. There are 35 Academic departments in the clinical area and basic sciences. The SOM is part of Johns Hopkins Medicine (which includes JHU SOM and Johns Hopkins Health System). The office works collaboratively with stakeholders in Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Medicine and Johns Hopkins Health System. This role will develop, plan, test and perfect financial tools that enable scenario planning and what-if analysis that focus on forward-looking choices. Must be able to quickly learn and understand key institutional drivers and perform predictive analysis, inclusive of the development of metrics and dashboards for senior leadership. Perform analysis of financial reports and data and prepare subsequent narrative analysis for management inclusive of recommendations. Develop detailed financial models to help reduce cycle times for annual budgeting, projections and reporting. Utilize knowledge of the university's financial accounting systems. This individual should have the ability to work independently to achieve departmental goals, deadlines, and desired outcomes/results. In addition, expected to collaborate and engage key stakeholders of the Clinical Practices Association (CPA), University Controllers Office, financial planning and analysis process (includes University, School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Medicine).
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Key contributor to the accounting cycle by identifying and analyzing transactions, interprets and reviews transaction postings to a journal, posts journal information to the ledger and monitors the trial balance.
Works with key stakeholders to derive variances explanations of budget vs actuals each month.
Assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual GAAP financial statements and provides support in forecasting costs & revenue models using trended data and analytics.
Should have a strong working knowledge of accounts receivables, accounts payable, time and expense capture, fund accounting, project accounting and revenue recognition management.
Responsible for completing key account reconciliations utilizing the Blackline application.
Incumbent will support special projects on the Operations Performance Transformation (OPT) committee with senior management.
Supports the business office with remediation of internal audit deficiencies and findings.
Assists in the development and review of key financial controls used in mitigating risk and errors through the development and compliance with strong financial policies.
A contributor for providing financial information that can be used for managerial reports, financial statements, strategic planning and decision making.
Analyzes complex financial data and extracts and defines relevant information; interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability.
Reviews costs and performs cost benefit analysis related to projects and/or programs.
Performs complex cost and financial analysis of data reported in the various accounting systems.
Develops complex financial models and reports for forecasting, trending, and results analysis.
Interprets financial data and transactions of events for management making economic or business decisions.
Reviews and evaluates current internal/external processes and makes recommendations for improvements for automating and streamlining routine tasks.
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and presentations/graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
Records, classifies, and summarizes financial transactions and events in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles as well as fund accounting.
Recommends process improvements and follows through with implementation as approved.
Documents processes and procedures as needed.
On a regular and continuing basis, develops knowledge of the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
Three years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
Advanced knowledge in the use of spreadsheets, presentations and word processing required.
MS EXCEL – Advanced, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other advanced Excel tools and functions required.
REPORTING TOOLS – Business Objects or similar tools.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of financial software applications and database utilization/management preferred.
Knowledge of SAP accounting system practices and implementation within the Hopkins environment desirable.
Additional Microsoft Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Access) (strongly desired)
