The Whiting School of Engineering employs server and workstation technologies to support academic, research, and administrative activities. Leveraging enterprise tools within WSE IT, this LAN Administrator II position will support the departments of WSE in their use endpoint computing devices on Windows, Macintosh, and mobile platforms.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Work with faculty and administrative staff in supported departments to resolve immediate issues and assists more senior WSE IT staff in designing preventative measures for future problems.
Collaborate with WSE IT system administrators to test new software and plan deployments that will have an impact in WSE.
Take direction from the director and other WSE IT system administrators on needs and goals. Proposed solutions are reviewed with the team to determine their appropriateness and to plan implementation.
Collaborate with Hopkins central IT services and external vendors on software products and technology solutions
Specific Systems, Applications & Projects:
KACE Service Desk system: Uses existing KACE system to manage help requests (tickets), perform hardware / software inventories, and software distribution.
Desktop backup and encryption: Crashplan is a cloud-based desktop backup system with installable clients. Native OS-specific encryption functionality is used.
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) – is a toolset for automating desktop and server deployment that reduces deployment time and standardizes desktop and server images, along with improved security and ongoing configuration management. This position will use MDT to deploy images created by others in WSE IT.
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) – provides application delivery, desktop virtualization, device management, and security that make it possible to enable productivity amidst device proliferation for the Windows platform. This position will use SCCM to deploy packages created by others in WSE IT.
File, desktop imaging, and other supporting servers that run the tools used in completion of tasks.
Scope of Area, Project & System Support:
Direct support of several hundred users across WSE departments, including faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, with a diverse set of needs for research, administrative and instructional computing.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
In-depth knowledge of client desktop and mobile operating systems and environments.
Basic knowledge of Active Directory structure, with facility in managing users, groups, and computers within AD, as well as understanding of how device and user policies for Windows, Mac, and iOS can be leveraged.
Imaging with MDT and SCCM
Broad understanding of fundamental IT principles that result in maintainable, secure systems supporting a wide array of applications.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, ability to support customers of all sorts (students to deans, non-technical to experts).
Preferred Skills:
KACE and Crashplan
Relevant certifications in Windows technologies or IT security a plus.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years college coursework.
Three years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge in the assigned IT environment.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
