The Chair is the chief executive and academic officer of the Department and is responsible for the entirety of the educational (undergraduate, graduate and continuing), research, public service and patient care programs of the department. The chair will be a geographic full-time faculty member at the Chattanooga campus.

Reporting Lines: All faculty in the Department report to the chair in their roles as faculty members. The chair reports to the Dean of the COM-C.

Specific responsibilities:

The Chair is responsible for the search, recruitment and appointment of all faculty in the department. In this role, the Chair will be familiar with the policies of the COM relative to faculty recruitment and appointment and with the UT-EHS Affiliation Agreement.

• The Chair in cooperation with the Dean will develop a plan for the size and structure of the faculty of the department. The plan will include the structure of the faculty relative to geographic full-time, affiliate, part-time and clinical status.
• The Chair is expected to structure the faculty as geographic full-time to the extent possible.
• The plan for the size and structure of the department will include a proposal on the funding of all faculty positions.
• The plan will be submitted for approval by the Dean of the COM-C.
• The plan for the size and structure of the faculty will take into consideration the educational, research, service and patient care needs of the department and the patient care needs of EHS.

The Chair will cooperate fully with the COM-C in providing experiences for students of other medical schools when such programs are undertaken by the COM-C. Educational experiences offered on an individual basis by the department and to students of other medical schools will be carried out within the guidelines of the COM-C.

The Chair will be responsible for maintaining a fully accredited residency program. The residency will be coordinated with the leadership of EHS and will be carried out in accordance with the policies and guidance of the Office of Graduate Medical Education.

The Chair. will be expected to maintain the patient care program of the faculty of the department, maintain the skills of the faculty, and provide appropriate resources to support the department's education and research programs. In all patient care endeavors the Chair will coordinate the plans and the program with the leadership of the COM-C to best meet the needs of both UTCOM and EHS.

The Chair will be responsible for the research program of the department and will adhere to all research policies of both EHS and UTCOM-C.

The Chair will be responsible for fostering and guiding the careers of the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. They will work with the faculty to establish on an annual basis, expectations for each paid faculty members, and on the basis of those expectations will carry out an annual evaluation of each paid faculty member in accordance with the policies of the COM-C. Theye will seek appropriate input from the leadership of the
UT COM and EHS in evaluating faculty. They will nominate faculty for appointment in the COM-C. They will establish the annual total compensation of all geographic full-time, part-time, and affiliated faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Faculty compensation levels will be established in consultation with the Dean of the COM-C and with the leadership of EHS. All faculty compensation levels must be approved by the Dean.
