Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuitywith a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Reviews and analyzes new protocol submissions and amendments to previously approved research; performs laboratory inspections for final approval and assist in ensuring compliance with the Office of Research Compliance.
Maintains oversight of annual and biannual inspections of laboratories; effectively communicates findings to research personnel and provides knowledge and support (when appropriate) to help correct deficiencies; assists in the maintenance of a database that tracks laboratory audits and deficiencies identified during audits.
Serves on and attends Institutional Biosafety Committee and other research committees.
Develops and presents biosafety training modules (classroom and online versions) for researchers.
Develops SOPs and documents within the biosafety program as they apply to specific research facilities.
Remains available as an emergency responder and acts as a part of the university response team in the event a suspected biological material release occurs; may interface with outside agencies during responses.
Provides guidance to other Biosafety staff.
Bachelor's degree (preferably in microbiology, biology, public health, infectious diseases, or related field)
3 years of experience related to biosafety, research compliance or related research
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
CBSP - Certified Biological Safety Professional upon date of hire
CSP - Certified Safety Professional upon date of hire
CIH - Certified Industrial Hygienist upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
This is an exempt position with an annualized salary not to exceed $63,860.
