The Cochella Lab is seeking a Research Technologist who will join a young and dynamic, international, scientific community to tackle questions related to regulation of gene expression during development and disease. The main responsibilities will be ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the laboratory (including managing supplies and reagents), molecular biology work, and work with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (such as managing a frozen strain collection, microinjection, microscopy and genetics). For interested candidates there will be opportunities to pursue an independent research project, and a chance to make an important contribution to basic biomedical research.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Performs research lab tests and experiments.
Follows established procedures and protocols, utilize appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which will include handling C. elegans and generating transgenic lines, molecular cloning, immunostaining, in situ hybridization and microscopy, among others.
Exchanges routine information with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
Responsible for some routine operational activities such as: ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, preventative maintenance of equipment.
Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong communication skills.
Good organizational skills.
Knowledge of good lab practices (including detail-oriented documentation).
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, format data and/or test reports.
Individual must be able to work independently as well as in a team.
Experience with microscopy and/or C. elegans work will be highly regarded.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 70% of the time.
Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.
The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes). In some areas workspace is limited.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of academic research experience preferred.
Hands-on experience with molecular biology preferred
