Associate Director Occupational Health and Safety

The Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) at Cornell University provides comprehensive programs and services to support our staff, world class researchers and university community. EHS assists with compliance to the campus community that promotes health, safety and environmental stewardship. The Associate Director of Occupational Health and Safety leads a team of health and safety professionals comprised of safety engineers, industrial hygiene, and DOT specialist.

Key Responsibilities:

Serve as a critical member of Cornell University's EHS leadership team. This position is a highly visible role at the university, serving as a key partner with and liaison to university committees and the facility and campus services community. The associate director requires skills necessary for the development of institutional strategies that best serve the campus needs in a continuously changing environment.

Core Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field plus 5 years of experience, or equivalent combination; validated experience in the management of comprehensive health and safety programs and people
• Board certification in a recognized professional health and safety discipline such as industrial hygiene (CIH) or safety professional (CSP), preferred
• Demonstrated background in health and safety risk assessments
• The ability to develop strategy in a complex organization regarding health and safety with proven communication processes and demonstrated ability to lead effective change
• Demonstrated skills and abilities in EHS auditing functions, conducting EHS audits and implementing actionable items; including EHS management systems such as ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18000
• Experience working with safety and health related committees; including both bargaining units and non- bargaining unit employees
• Excellent communication skills both written and oral and the ability to work in a diverse culture
• Demonstrated use of Microsoft Suite products, at a minimum: Word, Excel and Power Point
• Proven track record of completing work on time
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment including: air purifying & supplied air respirators, hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing
• A valid Driver's license and ability to pass background check, as required by Cornell
