The Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit (BPRU) is seeking a Senior Research Program Manager who has primary management responsibilities for research staff at the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit (BPRU), a large research program with over 50 research staff that need to be managed in a multi-tier organizational structure. The BPRU resides within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Has primary management responsibilities for research staff at BPRU including, but not limited to Research Program Managers (RPMs), Senior Research Program Supervisors (SRPSs), Research Program Supervisors (RPSs), Research Program Coordinators (RPCs), Senior RPCs (SRPCs), Research Assistants (RAs), and students.
Serves as a member of the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit's Senior Staff and contributes to programmatic solutions as needed.
Conduct regular meetings with RPMs, SRPSs, RPSs, and other staff as needed to address laboratory, programmatic, and Unit wide issues.
Conduct monthly meetings with individual members of the BPRU management team to discuss issues around leadership, career development, and personal development.
Ensure that supervision and management of staff is consistent across diverse labs and centers within BPRU.
Coordinate the creation, maintenance, and updating of unit policies and procedures related to research and assist with the evaluation of existing procedures at BPRU.
Create and coordinate the creation of job descriptions to support BPRU's unique research focus and structure.
Coordinate with faculty and research staff to assess staffing needs and implement new hires to address those needs.
Develop and implement diversity, equity and inclusion recruiting frameworks to ensure appropriate representation across staff members.
Streamline, oversee, and coordinate with other supervisory staff, employee recruitment, including onboarding and training of new staff members.
Consult and assist on management of BPRU's Student Internship Program (SIP).
Attend SIP planning meetings.
For the SIP, coordinate feedback in the form of written performance evaluations to university advisors in support of grades for students.
For the SIP, assist with the administrative needs of students including disciplinary actions, approval of time sheets, and annual reviews.
As indicated, meet individually with students to mentor and advise on educational and career goals.
Under direction from BPRU's Director and faculty, assist in the development of a strategic plan for the Unit and work to maintain adherence to the strategic plan.
Work with BPRU Director and faculty, and departmental leadership, to prepare the Unit for change; work with stakeholders to plan the change; assist with the implementation of change.
Leverage technology and best practices to maximize the efficient and safe use of BPRU office and research space in the Brady Behavioral Biology Research Building and other sites utilized by the BPRU.
Work with Client Technology Solutions and internal BPRU information technology staff to troubleshoot and implement computing solutions for the Unit.
Oversees & Assists other Stakeholders in the administrative, logistical, regulatory, and scientific implementation of research protocols.
Build and lead research teams to conduct study protocols and provide direct project management for selected studies.
Ensure that projects meet Good Clinical Practice regulatory standards
Work with the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) staff to ensure effective execution of research protocols.
Perform protocol reviews and work with sponsors to address issues that may hamper study progress.
Maintain communication with sponsors and clinical research organizations. Periodically meet with JHU faculty, sponsors, and other representatives to review progress.
Meet with industry/government representatives to review data on an ongoing basis and reconcile data discrepancies. Access information requested by industry/government representatives in a timely fashion.
Assist study teams to determine the eligibility of participants based on inclusion/exclusion criteria.
Monitor experimental sessions and data collection procedures to ensure accurate data collection and participant compliance.
Serve as backup in other program research functions and protocols as needed.
Coordinate the activities of physicians, pharmacists, recruiters, statisticians, nurses, and other research staff with respect to contractual study related functions.
Work with finance staff to prepare invoices to sponsors.
Work with finance staff to maintain global oversight of budgets to ensure that projects come in at or under budget

Excellent oral communication skills to deal effectively within and outside the department.
Excellent written communications skills in a variety of forms, print material, website content, speeches, and publicity materials.
Knowledge of and aptitude for graphic design and typography.
Skilled in computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Publisher.
Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing and prioritizing multiple assignments.
Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.
Physical Requirements

Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.

Supervisory responsibility
Four Research Program Supervisors.
Over 35 other staff under these supervisors (e.g., SRPCs, RPCs).
Ten-fifteen part time undergraduate students in the SIP (varies by semester).
One Compliance monitoring specialist.
One Data Analyst.
One Communications coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in related discipline required.
Eight years related experience including significant experience in field conducting large research projects.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD preferred.
