Under the direct supervision of the Director for Research and Laboratory Safety the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) is responsible for the oversight and management of the universityâ™s chemical hygiene and hazardous materials programs as required by OSHA 1910.1450, Occupational exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories. The Chemical Hygiene Officer will provide leadership and participate with all levels of the campus organization to develop and implement appropriate policies and practices while continually evaluating established procedures for compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. This role will provide subject matter expertise in chemical hygiene and hazardous materials management and waste in a laboratory setting and as it applies to the greater university campus. The Chemical Hygiene Officer is responsible for educating and training the campus community while interfacing with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies. Required Education: Bachelor's Degree Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Physical Sciences or closely related scientific field.
Preferred Education: Master's Degree Masterâ™s degree- Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or closely related scientific field
Required Experience: 5+ years 5-7 years of experience in environmental health and safety. In lieu of a degree, consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience.
Preferred Experience: 5+ years Preferred Experience â¢ Chemical Hygiene Officer Certification or ability to obtain within three months of assignment. â¢ 5+ years. Increasingly responsible managerial level experience with Environmental Health and Safety. â¢ Experience providing chemical hygiene services in a university environment. â¢ Experience developing and providing training programs. â¢ Experience evaluating and testing ventilation systems. â¢ Additional desired qualifications include current IATA, DOT, HAZWOPER, and RCRA training.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: â¢ Demonstrated ability to conduct audits or quality assurance tasks, write concise summaries and follow up on deficiencies. â¢ Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary. Ability to respond to campus emergencies after hours and on weekends/holidays, as needed. â¢ Wide and comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local occupational regulations, professional standards, and best practices in safety. â¢ Excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated ability to write technical reports and related professional correspondence. â¢ Ability to act independently and as a team member. â¢ Strong computer software skills.

In compliance with NYCâ™s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $120,000.
