Facility Research Operations (30%)
Supervise the SAFL Facility Coordinator (full-time staff member) who provides day-to-day operational and maintenance support for the laboratory.
Develop and implement policies for the use of shared SAFL facilities and equipment include methods for reserving facilities (flumes, tanks, instrumentation) and for end-of-project clean-up and returning facility after use.
Implement programs for ongoing cleaning, purging, and organization to keep SAFL a professional looking research facility. Maintain SAFL and as clean, safe, well-organized, research-ready facility.
Develop procedure for tracking facility usage and utilization and provide annual summary to SAFL administrative team.
SAFL Health and Safety Program (25%)
Co-supervise the SAFL Research Safety Officer (RSO) who provides day-to-day health and safety support to researchers.
Conduct an annual review of SAFL health and safety policies and procedures ensuring programs are up to date and inline with UMN, federal, state and local standards.
Develop training programs for SAFL researchers and staff including an annual SAFL Safety Seminar. Programs will include laser safety, open water research, winter research safety, chemical hazardous materials training, vehicle usage, shop and tool training, and other programs as appropriate.
Review and implement safety programs for the UMN’s Eolos Wind Research Field Station including necessary training and safety measures for working with UMN’s 2.5MW wind turbine and meteorological tower.
Coordinate with adjacent land owner Xcel Energy and ensure SAFL’s flood response protocols are established and implemented.
Facility Maintenance Program (25%)
Review, revise as necessary, and implement a program for ongoing maintenance of SAFL research facilities ensuring the facilities are in good working order and research-ready. Example of facilities include SAFL’s primary water intake, Supply Channel, SAFL Wind Tunnel, Main Channel, wood and metal shops, volumetric tanks, Outdoor StreamLab, and Eolos wind turbine. Work with Facility Coordinator to implement.
Develop a prioritized list of long-term facility maintenance needs for SAFL and work with the SAFL leadership, College, University Facilities Management, Capital Project Management to develop plans for addressing needs.
Review and implement Eolos Field Station Turbine and Met Tower schedule maintenance. Work with Eolos research team to implement.
Review and oversee maintenance of non-research infrastructure including parking lots, Quonset hut storage facility, snow removal equipment. This including working with UM Facilities on building utilities and HVAC. Work with Facility Coordinator to implement.
Lead response along with other staff member to emergency maintenance issues including research and non-research facilities, Eolos wind turbine and met tower.
Faculty Research Support (20%)
Support Facility Coordinator and student employees in providing research support services to faculty, graduate student, visitors and staff.
Develop Operation Manuals for key research facilities including Main Channel, Wind Tunnel, Water Tunnel and Tilting Bed Flume.
Identify facilities and floor space that are underutilized and help identify opportunities for renovation to meets future faculty and staff research priorities.
Required Qualifications
BS/BA Degree plus six years of applicable experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to thrive in a team setting and desire to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students on a day-to-day basis.
Demonstrated experience with work-place health and safety protocols and safety training.
Experience managing facility operations.
Proficient with written and verbal communication and comfortable with public speaking.
Proficient with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, and MS Project (or similar project management software)
Experience with establishing budgets and cost estimates for facility, equipment, and personnel.
Training in workplace safety and industrial hygiene.
Experience with strategic planning for facility needs.
Collaboration-minded with positive attitude and desire to support SAFL and UMN mission and goals.
Experience working with UMN University Services (CPPM, FM, DEHS, Planning, Real Estate, etc).
