Detailed Job Description Technical: Responsible for installation and set-up, maintenance and upgrades, and/or operation of equipment within teaching and core research labs. Demonstrates equipment operation to students, staff, and faculty. Expected to upgrade skills with self-directed and formal training as necessary to stay current with technology developments.
Lab Administration: Responsible for maintenance of the laboratories and facilities used by Biomedical Engineering faculty, staffs and students.
Manages access to facilities through Lenel.
Maintains MSDS-Online (a university inventory of chemicals) to assure accessibility of all chemical users in the chemical engineering department.
Processes ordering, tracking, and receiving of purchases for teaching laboratories and for research labs as required by PIs.
Oversees projects and routine activities involving maintenance, relocation or renovation of facilities
Oversees inventories of capital equipment, materials and supplies
Oversees and manages the storage and removal of all chemical waste generated by the Biomedical Engineering Program.
Foster relationships with vendors and suppliers to meet needs of facility
Managerial: Responsible for a wide range of technical, managerial, and administrative activities necessary to ensure clean, safe, and functional work environment that supports education and research. Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the core laboratories as well as compliance with federal, state, and university regulations; These policies, procedures, and standards includes:
Safety: Responsible for facility and/or lab safety. Ensures that staff and facility/lab users have property training. Effectively manages potential hazards, such as chemical, electrical, radiation, laser, compressed gas, personal hazard (lock-out tag), right-to-know, hazardous waste. Insure compliance with all federal, state, local environmental, health and safety standards and practices. Expected to respond to after-hour emergencies and assume leadership role in emergency response situations.
Evaluates technologies and procurement options for capital equipment purchases and updates, renovations, and supplies.
Research costs, competitive bidding, and evaluate appropriate laboratory technologies;
Lab safety and quality control by identifying potential hazards, managing handbooks, developing and implementing training programs;
Plans and oversees project involving laboratory maintenance, expansion, relocation, renovation to include costing, methods, and laboratory resources required;
Develops short and long term goals for laboratories; engages with faculty to develop plan, costing estimates, and logistics for large research and academic projects;
Assists in design for construction of new or modification of existing laboratory environment.
Manages lab layout, efficiencies, and workflows;
Scheduling and accessibility of the BME Core laboratory facilities.
Develops and manages databases to track laboratory usage.
Instructional: Provides technical support to student, faculty and staff to achieve academic and research missions. Examples may include
Assists and provides technical support to students, staff and faculty completing projects or conducting research
Assists with set up of laboratory sections
Provide one-on-one and small group training, verifies competency to use equipment or conduct experiments within core laboratories.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors Degree with 5 years experience or Associates Degree with 10 years experience
Familiarity with equipment typical of a biological lab, as well as sterile and aseptic technique.
