The Chemistry Lab Manager for the Chemistry Department at Mills College at Northeastern University serves a critical role to support Chemistry and Physics courses and labs by overseeing the preparation of technical materials, including pre-nursing classes. This position will also serve as the Safety Officer for Chemistry and Physics and be the point of contact for these departments with the manager of EH&S. The incumbent is responsible for selection, purchase, receipt, and organization of supplies as instructed by faculty. The Lab Manager coordinates maintenance of lab instrumentation and computers, monitors the material and equipment maintenance budget, and maintains stockroom and laboratories.

Essential Job Functions:
Oversee the preparation of technical materials for chemistry and physics laboratory classes; prepare reagents for use in classes utilizing proper laboratory technique; calculate amounts of chemicals needed; set up labs, computers and instruments as appropriate.
In coordination with Lab faculty, determine materials and supplies needed, and review inventory and determine need for supplies.
Maintain and create vendor relationships, obtain prices and availability for Chemistry Lab materials.
Complete requisitions and order chemicals, equipment, and general supplies as needed; complete requisition, order and receive supplies.
Store toxic materials according to established guidelines; maintain safety equipment.
Review lab protocols with faculty and students to determine the generation of hazardous wastes; segregate and prepare hazardous waste including toxic or bacteriological materials for disposal according to established guidelines.
Oversee the growth and maintenance of sterile cultures as assigned.
Maintain lab instruments; perform minor repairs and provide safe storage of glassware and other lab materials or equipment; coordinate instrument repairs; negotiate service contracts.
Review and monitor assigned budget; assure proper accounts are charged; prepare computerized budget reconciliation and reports as assigned.
Ensure that appropriate self-inspections are maintained; audit chemical use areas for compliance to OSHA, including proper labelling, spill containment, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) availability, and chemical segregation.
Establish and maintain an effective customer service orientation towards all persons contacted during the course of job performance.
Act as departmental safety officer, supporting a safe work environment by maintaining EHS administrative processes, conducting basic EHS training and effectively using a range of EHS tools and processes to implement EHS programs and drive compliance.
Student Employee Supervision
Maintain accurate and up-to-date Student Lab Teaching Assistant position description; coordinate hiring and training.
Supervise Student Lab Teaching Assistants in their work assisting students during Labs, cleaning Labs, and in reagent preparation; additional duties as assigned by Lab instructors.
Review and approve time sheets of student assistants via Workday; number of student TAs per semester will vary.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Common problem solving tasks associated with this position include creating and revising operating procedures, periodically reviewing record keeping systems, updating forms, preparing reports, analyzing data, and identifying solutions.
Unusual or complex problems solving tasks associated with this position include troubleshooting instrumentation, juggling needs among lab instructors and multiple lab sections.
Budget monitoring and control.

Preferred Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in Chemistry; or an applicable Lab Science field, with course work in chemistry, physics, geology, or biology.
Teaching Assistant experience in an academic or research lab setting.
2+ years practical laboratory experience.
Preferred Technical Areas of Expertise:
Understanding of procedures for safe and compliant usage of hazardous/toxic materials.
Understanding of laboratory terminology, techniques, equipment, and instrumentation.
Understanding of and ability to follow hazardous waste regulations related to safe usage and disposal of toxic substances.
Expertise in sterile techniques, and proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
Understanding of or ability to learn safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department and College.
Plan, prioritize, organize and anticipate the needs of assigned laboratory.
Prepare reagents.
Perform chemical calculations required for reagent preparation.
Plan and coordinate instrument and supply usage.
Ability to make minor repairs to laboratory instrumentation.
Ability to explain laboratory techniques, procedures, and use of instruments to students.
Experience in training students and employees in safe laboratory practices.
Observe health and safety regulations including regulations related to hazardous waste disposal, proper chemical and gas storage, and other applicable requirements associated with the safe and compliant operation of academic and research laboratories

The position is 100% Full Time Equivalency (FTE), exempt, and is not union eligible. The position reports to the Environmental Health and Safety Program Manager (EHSM), Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS), and has a secondary report to the Chair of the Chemistry Department. This is an on-campus position and is not remote or hybrid-eligible.
The expected hiring range for this position is $73,535 to $93,755 based on the position's scope and responsibilities.
