Department Description
The Engineering Student Design Center is managed by the College of Engineering Dean's Office. The ESDC includes a machine shop and welding area, a wood shop, composites wet lab, sanding and shaping of composites shop, rapid prototyping shop, and a Student Project Area. The College of Engineering annually sponsors student project teams that enter various regional and national design competitions such as Challenge X, Formula SAE, Aerobrick, Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, Micro-aeronautics Competition, Steel Bridge Competition, and the Chemical Car Competition. As part of these competitions, the students apply their knowledge to design and build vehicles and structures and are supported by the ESDC facilities and staff.
Job Summary
Reports to the Shop Manager of the Diane Bryant Engineering Student Design Center (ESDC). Includes facilitating full operation of the ESDC in the absence of the Shop Manager. Oversee students, staff, and faculty who are using the ESDC facilities to ensure that all safety and security policies and procedures are met. Assist in the instruction of laboratory classes and other courses that use the ESDC facilities. Ensure that the students design and build projects that are competitive and safe, while complying with all competition rules, safety policies, and safe operating procedures. Provide theoretical and/or mathematical support in determining the feasibility of engineering designs with consideration of such factors as system effectiveness, reliability, safety configuration, and cost. Evaluate student-designed parts and systems prior to machining and fabrication to insure that planned tasks will be within the safe operating parameters of the equipment to be used. Also assist the ESDC Shop Manager in other tasks and projects as needed throughout the College of Engineering.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Required to wear protective clothing and a fitted respirator when required by EH&S requirements for occupational health and safety, and to follow safety guidelines in a machine shop environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Required to obtain a UC Davis fork truck license.
Work occasional evening or weekend hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training.
Experience in theoretical and mathematical methods to provide support to students on design, manufacture, assembly, and test of mechanical components and systems. Excellent oral and written skills to communicate effectively with students and serve as a role model for their personal and professional development.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Machining and tool maker skills, including the use of lathes, drill presses, tool grinders, surface grinders, and CNC milling.
Set-up and operate standard machine shop tools (both manual and computer controlled). Apply accepted shop practices, machining principles and standard techniques. Experience instructing engineering students in machining principles and techniques associated with these machines used in manufacturing and fabrication processes of modern industry.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers. Includes experience with review, evaluation, and communicating solutions for design deficiencies.
Preferred:
Extensive knowledge of Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering, or related field, demonstrated through education and/or experience.
Experience to designing 2D, 3D, and solid model parts using CAD software.
Knowledge of CNC programming and operation of CNC machinery using CAM software such as SolidWorks and Fusion 360.
Proficient in Stick Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAC), Metal Inert Gas (MEG), Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) for steel and aluminum, oxygen-acetylene welding and flame cutting, brazing, silver solder and lead soldering.
