Mass General Hospital, an affiliate of Mass General Brigham, is committed to supporting patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community. We place great value on being a diverse, equitable and inclusive organization as we aim to reflect the diversity of the patients we serve. At Mass General Brigham, we believe in equal access to quality care, employment and advancement opportunities encompassing the full spectrum of human diversity: race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, ethnicity, national origin and all the other forms of human presence and expression that make us better able to provide innovative and pioneering healthcare and research.
The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Director of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and performs executive functions on all matters required to run a large, sophisticated, multi-species biomedical in vivo research support function that serves approximately 33% of the $1.2 B Mass General Research Institute (MGRI) funding. The AV position is required by all animal welfare animal care and use programs. This program has been AAALACi-accredited since 1993.
The CCM provides sanitation, husbandry, veterinary care, and requested research support for the hospital’s research community. The Director will:
Work with MGRI Senior Administration on all matters related to the use of animals in research and/or teaching, including but not limited to expansion into new areas (e.g., gnotobiotics, PDX models, advanced anesthesia/analgesia management), animal program infrastructure (e.g., capital planning, renovations and strategic planning), matters of potential security risk regarding animal right threats and public relations issues related to the animal models used.
Work closely with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Research Administration, Research Compliance, Department of Safety and Occupational Health, Buildings and Grounds and the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) Subcommittee on Animal Research (SAR) to foster a collaborative, excellence-based research environment.
Ensure efficient care for all animals covered under an approved-IACUC protocol and to build a comprehensive program of animal care that meets or exceeds regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Lead a department of ~130 staff occupying approximately 100,000 sq ft of space spread across three campuses. The Center cares for more than 20 different species of animals and supports over 350 PIs and 1000+ active research protocols. Will also serve as the senior leader for an ACLAM-recognized Laboratory Animal Medicine and Management (LAMM) veterinary residency program with 4 GME-based residency positions available as well as 10-15 veterinary internship opportunities annually.
Maintain fiscal responsibility for an ~$18M operating budget and a leadership platform based on several concepts including continuous improvement or agility, servant leadership, employee empowerment and Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity and Belonging (DEIB). In fact, CCM is known regionally, nationally, and internationally for being the longest running lean management-based laboratory animal organization in the biomedical research sector.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products. The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions. Specifically, employees may be exposed to noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and animal waste products. The duration of exposure to any of the above is dependent on the assigned duties
DVM or equivalent doctoral degree in veterinary medicine, plus board certification in laboratory animal medicine or related specialty.
Proven record of management and leadership experience in large, complex laboratory animal care and use programs. Years of experience may vary but a minimum of 5-years of senior leadership experience is preferred.
