Position Title: Environmental Health and Safety Officer (EHSO)

Description:
Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the EHSO will have primary responsibility for overseeing and coordinating Hofstra University's laboratory health and safety activities. The EHSO will serve as the University's chemical hygiene officer and biosafety officer.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Develops and evaluates standard operating guidelines, laboratory inspections, provision of guidance and training, maintaining inventory of chemicals and other hazardous materials, hazard assessment, and spill response.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as University policies.
Collaborates with numerous constituencies on campus, including faculty, administrators, the Environmental Safety Committee, the Hazardous Waste Coordinator, and others to ensure environmental health and safety practices are adhered to in academic units.
Establishes and maintains an effective communications strategy, including website development, an electronic newsletter, and/or news articles with the objective of raising internal and external awareness of Hofstra's safety efforts.
Keeps current on best practices at peer colleges, benchmarks other institutions of higher education, and participates in off-campus events to identify new ideas and practices related to laboratory health and safety.
Works with academic departments to identify and pursue potential grant and resource development opportunities to support laboratory improvements and safety initiatives.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Science/Engineering or equivalent (BSc) required.
Six years of relevant experience in EHS, Sustainability, Bio Safety, Process Safety, Environmental Technology, or Risk Management.
Experience working with a complex regulatory framework and multiple regulatory bodies.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to employee health and safety and hazardous waste management.
One or more of the following certifications: CIH, CSP, CBSP.
Valid New York State Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree preferred.
