Position Description: The principal duties of this position are to manage the shared research instrumentation for SCSE, including AMC specific equipment as well as the equipment in the Research Instrumentation Laboratory (RIL), and to foster instrumentation and research collaboration between the various science and engineering departments of the SCSE. The position will also involve instructing a 3-credit course one semester per year on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Some of the specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Laboratory Management (40%) • Manage day-to-day operation of the RIL and the AMC Laboratory • Work effectively with other offices including the SCSE Dean's office (which provides administrative, human resources and financial support for RIL), AMC, UMD EHS office, Departmental offices, UMD central administrative offices, and others • Create and maintain a calendar for shared instrument access • Instrument scheduling for the RIL and the AMC Laboratory • Leading tours of RIL and AMC Laboratories as needed • Managing and tracking budget for the RIL and the AMC Laboratory • Maintaining websites for RIL and AMC Laboratories • Provide an annual report of shared services and instrumentation • Design new laboratory methods and procedures • Work with faculty and others on acquisition of new instrumentation and equipment
Internal and External Services (20%) • Develop a common business model for calculating and setting user rates, managing overall resource budgets, reporting of financial and other information to the AMC Director and SCSE Dean’s office • Promote services to internal and external users • Performing and reporting contract analyses for internal and external users
Teaching (15%) • Develop a curriculum and instruct a 3-credit course one semester per year on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) • Coordinate user training workshops and other forums to both promote services and provide user engagement
Training (15%) • Internal and external user training and assistance of the various instruments • Student training and assistance of the various instruments • Attending training sessions as needed for continued education
Equipment and Laboratory Maintenance (10%) • Maintenance of shared instrumentation website and calendar • Routine instrument operation and regular maintenance • Maintenance of radiation safety records • Setting up service contracts and agreements for instruments as needed • Maintenance of other safety and environmental health records
This position requires continued compliance with all licensing, certification, work eligibility, and other requirements of this position. The Employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Minimum Qualifications: • MS in Science or Engineering, with strong background in research instrumentation • One or more years of research training • Effective written communication skills appropriate to the position
Preferred Qualifications: • PhD in Science or Engineering, with strong background in research instrumentation • Ability to manage instrumentation and services for support of a wide range of undergraduate, graduate and faculty level research and research instruction activities of SCSE and the AMC • Strong communication, organization and budgetary skills • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills • Ability to work with a wide range of users including undergraduate and graduate students, professional staff, faculty, and administrators • Strong laboratory safety orientation
