A full-time Laboratory Manager is needed to join the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Laboratory Research topics of the laboratory include transplant immunology and immunoregulation, criopreservation, ischemia/reperfusion injury, regenerative medicine, nerve regeneration, and microsurgery education. The VCA Lab implements a multitude of techniques, including rodent and swine animal models of limb transplant, microsurgery, molecular biology, cell culture, and video and fluorescence microscopy. The Lab Manager will provide key organizational, experimental, and educational support to the daily activities of the VCA Lab. This position will be responsible for the scientific and administrative activities of the Lab and have extensive knowledge of overall objectives and interests of lab research. This person will report to the Scientific Director and Associate Scientific Director.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Supervises, orients, trains, and develops staff/fellows of assigned laboratories. Plans and coordinates staffing patterns to effectively and efficiently support the laboratory activities.
Manages staff including recommendations for hiring, terminating and performance appraisals.
Responsible for operation, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. Monitors and orders equipment, instruments and supplies as needed. Works with vendors and contract negotiations.
Performs actual laboratory/animal procedures as needed.
Handles troubleshooting and problem-solving issues related to ordering of tests and other related issues.
Responsible for the supervision of use, and regulatory compliance with all laboratory animals and animal protocols.
Responsible for compliance and audit preparation of assigned laboratory area for any regulatory and safety reviews.
Responsible for overall operational elements of the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience, preferably in a related laboratory.
Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment in a specialty lab.
Computer competency is required.
Must be willing to work with animals.
Preferred Qualifications
Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Animal experience strongly preferred.
