Overview The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Research will work with the Provost and Academic Deans to develop a Touro University California (TUC) strategic plan for research and scholarship. The AVP of Research will promote the University's areas of priority for research funding with internal and external audiences. This position will foster new and interdisciplinary research and scholarship initiatives and collaborations. This role will manage the research enterprise at TUC. The AVP of Research will collaborate with the Touro University System Office of the VP of Research to grow cross institution research and scholarship collaborations and to grow infrastructure supporting research and scholarship. The AVP of Research is responsible for research development, administration and external relations thereby creating an environment in which excellence in research enhances the mission of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and College of Education and Health Sciences., and TUC. The AVP of Research will facilitate the research agenda of the University focusing on knowledge generation, biomedical sciences, practice relevant, education pedagogy, and community-based research and scholarship. This position will also work collaboratively, and with the relevant expertise may provide oversight to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) at TUC. The TUC OSP facilitates external funding application submissions for research, instruction, and public service activities and provides assistance with all post-award management tasks. OSP serves as a liaison between scientists, administrators, and the sponsors to convey and ensure that all sponsored projects comply with appropriate University guidelines and policies, as well as federal, state, and sponsor regulations.

Responsibilities
Leads and advances research initiatives in line with the mission of the University and its Colleges.
Develops and implements a peer review process for extramural proposals to be reviewed prior to submission. Leads grant writing workshops and trainings for faculty to promote new grant submissions. Writes grants to support the University research and scholarship aspirations.
Maintains a database of TUC research accomplishments, including information on the status of faculty publications and grant submissions. Compiles and annual report of TUC activities to share with the TUC Academic Leadership and TCUS VP of Research.
Serves on the TUC Academic Leadership Team representing Research.
In partnership with TUC Faculty Senate Research Committee, implements and manages a University Research Seminar Series that features internal faculty researchers and external invited speakers.
In partnership with the TUC Faculty Senate Research Committee and associated College leadership to host the annual Research Day.
In partnership with TUC Administration and TUC Advancement, represents TUC Research efforts to local, regional, national and international grant funding agencies, and the community as a whole.
Works with TUC Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to ensure safety and compliance within the TUC basic science and clinical science laboratories. Insures individual and college compliance with research-related safety and regulatory requirements.
Collaborates with College Deans to develop opportunities for student involvement in research.
Further develops ongoing research relationships with local, national and international academic institutions and industry.
Fosters the critical mass of research on diabetes/metabolism and other University focus areas including growth in clinical and community research to grow out a Center of Excellence on campus.
Promotes TUC research accomplishments both internally and externally, e.g., through website, newsletters, press releases, annual research day etc.
Serves as a role model to build faculty research programs and nucleates collaborative research teams. Provides mentoring to 'up-and-coming' researchers and builds a mentoring program for faculty.
Serves as the liaison between NIH/NSF and other organization and campus faculty. Identifies federal and other programs that sponsor research. Serves as the TUC liaison for the Office of Research Integrity and is responsible for annual reports indicating whether there have been allegations of scientific misconduct
Ensures that research is conducted ethically and in alignment with the mission of TUC and Colleges.
Responsible for the education, training, and implementation of all regulations as well as federal, sponsor and University policies and procedures related to intramural and extramural research. Set and confirm commitment to policies and regulations and take appropriate actions to ensure the Universitys commitment to compliance.
Proposes, manages, and disburses the TUC research budget. Rationalizes cost/benefits of monetary investments in faculty research by evaluating faculty productivity (articles, grants submitted, grants obtained).
Provide reports, budgetary information, and other documents, as requested by TUC leadership.
Assist in the identification and recruitment of external hires to grow TUCs research portfolio.
Serves as an educator within one of the Colleges which includes preparing and delivering lectures or laboratory lessons on assigned topics.
If applicable, develops OSP staff to provide the highest quality sponsored programs services to faculty and department administrators and ensures staff competency, professional and personal development through sound performance management practices.
Conducts regular performance reviews of OSP staff and provides ongoing performance feedback; handles personnel issues, including hiring, scheduling, and corrective actions.
Evaluates OSP staffing levels and develops projections to meet operational needs as part of the annual budget process.

Qualifications The candidate should have a PharmD, DO, MD, PhD, or other related graduate or professional degree with a strong record of publications and funding history, a funded productive laboratory or equivalent, a national and possibly an international reputation in their field. The candidate should have at least 10 years experience in academic medicine/pharmacy/biomedical sciences/public health, experience in developing, implementing, and coordinating an academic research program and previous experience as research director or similar leadership position. The ideal candidate will have a research program that creates synergy with current areas of research expertise at TUC and experience leading or participating in interdisciplinary research.
