Johns Hopkins University seeks a full-time experienced, nationally certified ASL/ English Interpreter. The Interpreter will serve as a designated interpreter for a faculty member in the Department of Cognitive Science. This position is responsible for daily interpreting services and collaboratively supporting and teaming with other interpreters.
This is a 75% (30 hr/wk) full-time staff position eligible for full benefits.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Provides sign language/English interpreting for on-demand and regularly scheduled meetings, talks, classes, and other functions. Assignments may be a combination of recurring and one-time appointments. There may be occasional travel for conferences and invited talks.
Adheres to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Provides flexibility in scheduling, accommodating evenings and weekends, and on-call shifts.
Communicates with appropriate faculty, staff, and students to obtain preparation materials for appointments and shares prep materials with interpreters in a timely manner.
Supports in the development and maintenance of a highly qualified pool of hourly interpreters for a rigorous academic environment through training and mentoring in concert with the lead interpreter
Stays abreast of best practices in interpreting services and resources.
Able to do first screening of casual/hourly interpreters.
Performs other related work as needed.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field.
Demonstrated ethics training and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated evidence of successfully interpreting in a rigorous and fast-paced academic environment.
Demonstrated experience in accomplishing detailed organizational tasks within established deadlines.
Basic computer skills and proficiency.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
Current national certification as ASL/English Interpreter.
Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) membership (national) and membership in at least one affiliate chapter of RID.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field.
American Sign Language (ASL) fluency.
4 years related interpreting experience, preferably in post-secondary settings.
Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
8+ years of interpreting experience in post-secondary settings.
