The Johns Hopkins University Department of Otolaryngology is seeking an experienced Sr. Research Specialist who will work under the general supervision of Dr. Andrew Lane and assist in the overall operation of his laboratory. The individual will work closely with the Principal Investigator on various lab projects and conduct experiments related to sinusitis and olfaction. Participation in research conferences and the opportunity to perform own experiments within the context of laboratory projects are encouraged. There is the potential for authorship, and the lab has a history of including students and laboratory staff on abstracts and publications.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Works with Principal Investigator to design, conduct, and analyze scientific experiments and to help with manuscript and grant preparation.
Perform sophisticated data analysis utilizing extensive knowledge base and varied methods experience.
Independently perform immunologic and molecular assays on human and mouse tissue;
Help prepare and maintain tissue and cell cultures (includes monitoring incubators, biological hoods, etc.), and troubleshoot cultures using scientific knowledge and research experience.
Apply independent thought to make decisions with PI.
Will carry out experiments following new or modified protocols; performs laboratory tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments, developing and optimizing processes as needed.
Act as consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives.
Collaborate in the development of new technologies, protocols and use of equipment.
Apply problem solving skills based on an understanding of the research and experience, and progressively develop skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
Achieves a high level of professional/scientific skill and/or knowledge in specific area(s) and keep up with current developments and trends in area(s) of expertise.
Knowledge of scientific concepts, principles, practices and methods used to conduct or manage sound research; serves as a resource on technical and program-related issues for staff and others.
Trains new students and laboratory staff in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques
Enhances problem solving through interactions and discussions with collaborators or senior researchers at meetings and/or professional presentations.
General laboratory support: managing lab supply and animal orders, monitoring inventory, preparing specialized reagents, general lab organization.
In collaboration with PI, make research project decisions that may alter research objectives and direction.
Assist with protocols and training the new staff member(s) on protocol compliance.
Manage mouse colony and carry out experimental protocols on mice.
Performs work in collaboration with outside companies.
Maintains data for that collaboration and creates invoices for reimbursement.
Sustain an orderly laboratory workspace; perform related laboratory maintenance, monitor inventory of supplies, clean equipment, and place lab orders.
May contribute to writing peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Four years' experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with a Master's Degree are strongly encouraged to apply and/or 2-10 years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with knowledge of Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, or Chemistry.
Experience with handling rodents will be a plus.
Background in molecular biologic and immunologic techniques.
