The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine is seeking a CONurse Practitioner for the Children's Protection Team. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) position requires clinical effort in the Pediatric Emergency Department in both the Children Protection Team and emergency room. The successful candidate will provide services as an independent health care provider who, working collaboratively within the Child Protection team, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients in the Pediatric Emergency Department as well as supporting the Pediatric Emergency Child Protection team. This individual will also take consults from inpatient unit and work with the Child protection team on consults and emergency child protection cases in the ED and inpatient unit.
The position will work with the medical director of the child protection service as well as the child protection social work coordinator. The position will include trauma evaluations in the pediatric emergency department, inpatient setting, intensive care units, as well as in the outpatient clinic. This position will be involved in treatment and prescribing medication. Some on-call coverage will be required. Administrative work that will be required includes case management, meeting with partners in law enforcement and child welfare, testifying in court, and providing education to Children's Center staff on child protection issues. The successful applicant should be excited about building the child protection program.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for performing many patient-oriented tasks such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate treatments, and performing appropriate procedures.
Educates patients/participants and/or their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health, and intervene in acute or chronic illness.
Ensures patient and physician calls are returned in a timely manner, and all patient interactions are documented appropriately in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR).
Functions as a liaison between Pediatric Emergency Medicine, primary care providers, nurse case managers, inpatient personnel and health care professionals in other specialties.
Triage pages, responding as needed, or forwarding a detailed message to the appropriate physician.
Answer questions from patients regarding physician instructions, medications, prescription refills, and/or other aspects of clinical care.
Retrieve diagnostic results, coordinate physician sign-off of results, and call patients with results according to clinic protocol.
Assumes responsibility for own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education programs.
Responsible and accountable for time management, professional relationships, and interpersonal interactions.
Regularly attends all departmental meetings, assisting with an educational mission when necessary.
Assesses and/or manages follow-up plans, specific to the age of the patient served.
Regularly gives effective, complete, and accurate instructions regarding good health maintenance to include disease prevention and home health care according to department guidelines and under the supervision of a physician.
Records and documents health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services.
Acts as a resource to health care staff and implements programs to improve the health status of patients/families, taking into consideration the developmental needs of the parents and families.
Consistently requests consultations with appropriate departments when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
Additional experience may substitute for master's Degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Must be ANNPCB board certified.
