The Veterinary Service Center within the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an Animal Care Assistant II to provide basic care and husbandry for a variety of animal species (including mice, rats, and any other species as directed by supervisor).
The responsibilities include:
Cleaning and changing animal cages per the standard operating procedures, instructions on researchers' protocols, U.S.D.A. and NIH guidelines, and any other University and outside government requirements.
Perform routine husbandry techniques, such as breeding and maintaining strains of mice or other animals.
Observe and record signs of unusual appearance, behavior, illness, or death in animals.
Complete and maintain forms as required; administer pre-measured medications according to instructions.
Obtain routine diagnostic specimens from animals, i.e., blood for viral serologies; keep accurate and complete records on animal inventories and activities.
Comply with governmental regulations and University policies regarding health and safety and observe and support good health and safety practices.

The successful candidate must have:
One year of applicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory setting;
Prefer certification at the AALAS technician level or equivalent training; familiarity with NIH and U.S.D.A. guidelines.
Must possess mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and personal standards of cleanliness, neatness and organizational ability.
Must be able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow written and oral instructions provided in English.
Must be capable of properly handling and restraining all species of common laboratory animals, have no abnormal fear of any common laboratory species and should be free of animal-related allergies.
The candidate selected for this position will complete an Occupational Health Surveillance Questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and immunizations.
Must be willing and able to lift 50 pounds.
Must observe and support good health and safety practices regarding the use of chemicals and equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
High School Diploma or GED.
One year of applicable animal care experience in research or animal laboratory environment tor a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
In addition to the qualifications described for the Animal Care Assistant I level the Animal Care Assistant IIs should have:
Familiarity with NIH guidelines, Stanford animal care and use policies, and USDA regulations.
Ability to safely operate hand-truck, forklift, and pallet jack machines, as well as non-commercial vans, trucks and light transit vehicles.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:
When driving, must have a valid California non-Commercial Class C license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
Often lift and carry materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
Frequently handle materials up to 20 lb. Occasionally carry/pull up to 60 pounds, push over 60 pounds
Walk/stand for long periods.
Bend, squat, reach above shoulder level.
Often use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
Required vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception.
Ability to talk and to hear.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
Work in direct contact with animals and all components of animal housing and animal research environment.

The animal care assistant should be free of animal-related allergies and willing and able to undergo a physical examination and all required immunizations. Must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds. Must observe and support good health and safety practices regarding the use of chemicals and equipment.

The expected pay range for this position is $28.26 (Step 1) - $34.13 per hr.
