The focus of this Sr. Research Specialist position is to support technical and administrative aspects of a clinical translational laboratory with focus on retinal vascular disease. The research group is a dynamic and multidisciplinary research group consisting of a broad array of individuals at multiple levels of training. Therefore, the position may require supervision of other staff and/or students in a research capacity as well as travel to research sites for monitoring, training and quality control purposes. The research topics encompass a range of acquired retinal disorders that impact the structure and function of the retinal vasculature. We aim to develop new methods of diagnosis and treatment using state-of-the-art imaging techniques and treatment modalities.
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with graduate level training. This candidate should be capable of independently learning new analytical techniques and who has significant expertise in one or more of the following areas: research protocol development and writing, IRB submissions, biostatistics, data analysis, human subject recruitment, retinal imaging (OCT, OCTA, Fundus photography, ERG etc), refraction, visual acuity assessment. This job may include assisting with experimental retinal surgery in animal models including in vivo ocular imaging and visual function testing of animals. The ideal candidate will have one or more peer-reviewed publications and will be involved in preparation of manuscripts and proposals for the principal investigator.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
IRB protocol development, submission and management
Prepare, edit and revision of IRB applications
Preparation and submission of IRB amendments and updates
Maintenance of IRB applications in good standing
Human Subjects Recruitment
Assist with identification and recruitment of human subjects from clinical populations
Maintain organized database and records of research subjects
Perform diagnostic imaging for research studies including fundus photography, OCT, OCTA, ERG etc
Perform baseline ocular assessments including visual acuity and medical history.
Develop detailed imaging protocols for lab use
Supervise and train other lab members and staff in imaging techniques
Make significant important contributions to the research, analyze data and prepare graphs/ charts, including statistics.
Present/publish data in conferences and per-reviewed journals
Contributes substantially to manuscripts, reports, and grant-writing.
Present data to PI and colleagues by oral and written means on a regular basis
Present information to the team in Journal Club and lab meetings
Assist with maintaining complex research equipment
Prepare, edit and revise research documents

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field
Four years experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques
Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
Proficiency with PC/ Mac is required, including MS Word, Excel, as is an excellent math aptitude.
