The Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology (MCP) and the Research Animal Resources (RAR) team are jointly seeking a Sr. Financial Analyst. This position coordinates and participates in the development and monitoring of the budgeting & finance activities related to both functional units. This position will develop financial reports for forecasting and result analysis to improve the operational and financial effectiveness of multiple business lines, including, service center, designated and general funds. The Sr. Financial Analyst will assist in financial planning and cost analyses in collaboration with departmental and divisional leadership, faculty, administrators.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Assists in management of multiple financial budgets. Submits the monthly financial transactions, such as KB15Ns, journal entries, and non-payroll cost transfers, on a timely basis (before deadlines). Ensures transactions have correctly posted.
Coordinates, consolidates, and analyzes departmental information for preparation of the monthly/quarterly and annual operating/capital budgets and five-year to ten-year plans.
Participates in the development of the departmental fiscal year annual operating budget for submission to the Deans Office.
Works towards revenue maximization by understanding and overseeing the use of various funding sources within the units.
Interprets and reviews financial data to evaluate and determine financial performance and financial projections to assist leadership in making overall business decisions.
Ensures that expenditures for budgets are monitored and that reports are prepared to maintain balanced accounts, including control salary, default accounts and effort reporting.
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, cost-accounting systems, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
Designs financial reports utilizing the institutions accounting system data and assist in the dissemination of information in various formats to cost center managers.
Maintains broad understanding of the financial positions/conditions of the various cost centers throughout the department.
Monitors and analyzes complex financial data and extracts and defines relevant information, interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability.
Analyzes budget patterns, projects expenditures, and prepares approved budget.
Assimilates information from various sources to draw conclusions, to effect change in processes, procedures, and reporting, and/or theorize downstream impacts.
Defines problems, collects data, establish facts and draw conclusions with direction (as necessary from others).
Must be able to interpret technical and detailed guidelines, policies and procedures, as well as explain or describe moderately complex information and presentation materials.
Oversees financial activity for RAR service center.
Makes recommendations for annual budget and spending plans. Assist in establishing user rates and fees. Develops tools to provide reports for forecasting.
Processes check requests and pay invoices, creates purchase orders and approves travel reimbursements.
Serves as a key approver for all Concur Travel and Expense reimbursements.
Serves as the P-Card holder and provides excellent customer service for on-the-spot purchases that are needed.
Function as a departmental resource, answering finance related questions and assisting divisions with financial tasks.
Communicate with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure established procedures are followed.
Apply working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, verify documents for completeness and compliance with government and private agencies.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Extensive MS Excel experience (Pivot Tables/Advanced Formula development)
Proficient knowledge of Office Suite (Word/Excel/Access/Outlook) and SAP
Proficient in the use of software applications, databases and spreadsheets.
Requires excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with employees at all levels of the University.
Ability to work independently and perform a high degree of accuracy.
Ability to manage budgetary matters at both high oversight and detailed analysis level.
Knowledge of federal regulations related to sponsored funding for educational institutions.
Ability to establish and meet work schedules within limited time frames and under tight deadlines.
Demonstrates a collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to lifelong learning.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience
Additional education(master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and adiitional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Masters Degree
Knowledge of federal regulations related to educational institutions
Knowledge of Johns Hopkins policies and procedures
