Department of Pediatrics, Section of Palliative Medicine has an opening for a full-time Open Rank: Instructor or Senior Instructor position.
Nature of Work:
This position is integral to the growth of the Pediatric Palliative Medicine Section at Children's Hospital Colorado, which supports patients with life-altering and/or life-threatening conditions. This position will work with a diverse interdisciplinary group of clinicians and support team members to deliver pediatric palliative care through pain and symptom management, assistance with clarification of goals of care, spiritual support, psychosocial support, and emotional support. The position will work primarily in the inpatient setting as well as across the continuum of care including outpatient and community teams, and will collaborate with consulting services, facilitating a trans-disciplinary approach to care.

Position Emphasis:
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
Conduct comprehensive, focused assessments of children and families with palliative care needs.
Formulate, implement, monitor, evaluate and modify palliative care plans and program activities with input from palliative care team and other collaborating care providers including community programs and facilities.
Work with patients and families to determine their understanding of their child's condition, proposed treatment plan and treatment options.
Assist children and families to develop self-care capabilities relative to identified problems.
Assist in all facets of care coordination for palliative care referrals.
Engage in quality improvement in patient care services and department functions, including evaluating the effectiveness of the health care delivery system in meeting the health care needs of pediatric palliative care patients and families.
Advocate for improvements in pediatric palliative care through participation in professional, private, and governmental groups.
Provide clinical expertise and guidance for undergraduate and/or graduate students in the specialty area.
Act as resource person for clinical information and education as requested by community agencies.
Assess the environment for potential need for consultation.
Plan clinical and educational interventions which are consistent with individual/organizational needs and goals and evaluate change/outcomes.
Implement patient and family education in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Participate in pediatric palliative care research, including quality and performance improvement initiatives.
Define goals for professional growth and participate actively in professional activities and organizations.
Maintain continuous professional certifications and licensure including continuing education activities.
Demonstrate accountability for evaluation of clinical practice, including adherence to organizational, state and national practice standards and codes.
Engage in active and frequent self-care activities for personal and professional growth and longevity.
Rotating weekend and evening call coverage either in person or by telephone.

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position has been established at:
Instructor: $98,000 to $112,000
Senior Instructor: $114,000 to $128,000
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Instructor:
Prior clinical experience involving care of children with complex, chronic and/or life- threatening conditions, or those at end of life.
Master's Degree leading to ability to be certified an Advanced Practice Nurse (Pediatric or Family or Physician Assistant.
The applicant must be licensed to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Colorado by date of hire.
Current DEA license in the State of Colorado or ability to obtain one by date of hire.
Senior Instructor:
Minimum of 8 years of clinical experience, including care of children with complex, chronic and/or life- threatening conditions, or those at end of life.
Master's Degree and certified as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Pediatric or Family or Physician Assistant).
The applicant must be licensed to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Colorado.
Condition of Employment
Must successfully pass a drug test through Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to effectively communicate within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong active listening skills when communicating with patients and families, staff and other professionals.
Robust capacity to work in a team environment.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong advocacy skills.
Knowledge of palliative care concepts including, but not limited to: symptom management, advanced care planning, spiritual support and psychosocial support.
Basic awareness of government waivers for palliative and hospice care.
Knowledge of medications and prescriptive authority per state law.
Preferred Qualifications
Hospice and Palliative Care Certification and/or prior training in serious illness communication or pediatric pain management.
Clinical nursing care or physician assistant experience in hospice and palliative medicine, children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), or pediatric/neonatal intensive care.
Spanish-speaking.
