Job Summary:
The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team. The NP provides healthcare in urgent/primary care health care settings providing care to adult patients. The NP has didactic education, clinical competency and national certification in the identified area of clinical practice enabling delivery of preventative healthcare for patients as well as the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness. Occupational Health NPs demonstrate an ongoing commitment to patient centered care and partner with patients to promote engagement and shared decision making to assure optimal health, well-being and self-management of disease processes. Supported by advanced knowledge of nursing theory and application, the NP demonstrates evidence-based medical knowledge, clinical judgment, technical competence, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and life-long professional development and competency validation.
UNIT SUMMARY
Welcome to the Vanderbilt Occupational Health Clinic (OHC). The clinic is located in the Medical Arts Building (21st Avenue South) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. OHC serves employees and provides timely evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries, illnesses and exposures. We also manage over 40 different programs to protect employees against specific work hazards. Travel vaccines and pre-travel consultations are available at no charge for employees going on international electives or other business travel. OHC operates a separate clinic, Vanderbilt Faculty/Staff Express Care, which provides treatment for non-work-related minor illnesses.
Our excellent, service-oriented patient care is directed and/or delivered by the collaborative, team-focused efforts of an interdisciplinary healthcare provider team including Attending Physicians and Nurse Practitioners. The Leadership Team is comprised of a Medical Director, Clinic Manager, Business Manager, Administrative Manager, and Front Desk Supervisor. Clinic staff members include Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Patient Services Specialists.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment and plan of care.
- In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute and complex care of diverse patients and manages patient's overall care, identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
- Orders, performs, interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
- Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
- Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
- Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
- Initiates appropriate referrals and consultations.
- Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
- May perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation including minor suturing.
- Maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary health care team.
- Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
- Documents/dictates key components of patient's progress clinic note where applicable.
- Documentation is timely, meets acute care compliance standards and captures patient acuity.
- Demonstrates Professional Practice behaviors including: preceptor/mentoring, education and instruction of students, nursing staff, nurses, graduate and novice nurse practitioners.
- Maintains CEUs, and membership in a professional organization.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's Degree (or equivalent experience). Master's degree in nursing, from an accredited institution, with education and clinical training specific to patient population (Required).
- > 1 year urgent care / primary care nurse practitioner experience preferred.
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.
- National Specialty Board Certification in Age-Specific, Specialty Patient Population; Eligible for NPI and DEA.
