University Fire Marshal

EHS assists the campus community with compliance and promotes health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
The Fire Marshal will promote and support a comprehensive fire safety compliance and prevention program for Cornell University. They will design, implement, maintain, and oversee fire safety programs and systems that advance the health and safety of the University and individuals, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, laws, and regulations. The Fire Marshal provides system-wide collaborative leadership and strategic direction for the University's fire compliance capability. They approve institutional models while overseeing the monitoring and prevention of fires in complex processes, designs, procedures, and operating equipment. This includes conducting complex inspections and audits to ensure compliance with the University's policies, procedures and governmental regulations and standards.
This position is responsible for developing programs to reduce the impact and occurrences of fires and emergencies, ensuring appropriate administrative support to assist university operations in minimizing disruptions from these emergencies, and confirming compliance related to applicable codes, laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and best practices. Additionally, this position oversees the Event Management Planning Process to ensure events are conducted safely and in compliance with applicable Life Safety Codes, Standards and Best Practices.
This position manages the Fire Protection and Emergency Services Division encompassing the University Fire Marshal Office and Emergency Services.
This position is responsible to lead or oversee fire investigations and work with fire investigatory agencies to determine cause.
This position is a highly visible role in the EHS organization and the University, serving as a key business partner with Facilities and unit leadership. It regularly partners with key stakeholders, such as directors, and governmental officials, on behalf of the EHS office. The role also involves developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external peers. The individual in this position is responsible for developing a strategic succession plan, leading, mentoring EHS staff members, and training fire and emergency services staff. All programs under the Fire Marshal function must carried out in a sustainable state of "in-control and capable" functionality.

We require these qualifications:
- Must have a bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental science, fire safety, emergency management, or closely related field, along with at least 3-5 years of fire safety and emergency services experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the managing comprehensive fire programs within a complex organization, as well as proven experience managing a compliance-oriented organization while supervising fire and emergency service professionals.
Candidates must also possess demonstrated experience in the following:
- The ability to critically assess fire safety programs, processes, and procedures, as well as capability to initiative new initiatives.
- The capacity to develop fire safety strategies in a complex organization, using effective communication processes and leading successful change. They must also possess significant experience dealing with regulators, community officials, internal directors, and facility managers on highly sensitive issues.
- Proven ability to develop strong relationships with resources such as fire departments, ambulance services, and inspectors.
- Proficiency in fire safety auditing and inspection functions.
- Experience working with fire safety-related committees; including both bargaining units and non- bargaining unit employees, while modeling safe behaviors. This includes management teams and committees.
- Demonstrated experience with National Incident Management - Incident Command Structure (NIMS-ICS)
- Familiarity with National Fire Protection Association standards.
- Understanding and experience with all-hazards approach to emergency management.
- Must possess a high degree of integrity; be results oriented, a self-starter, proactive, and effective in driving change.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with various stakeholders, in a diverse cultural environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel, and Power Point. A proven track record of completing work on time and within budget while fulfilling fiduciary duties.
- Must have a valid Driver's license and be able to pass background check, as required by Cornell.
