The Center for Research and Reform in Education within the School of Education is seeking a part-time Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will participate as an educational evaluator under supervision from a senior-level CRRE researcher on studies involving mixed- methods data collection. This individual will assist in developing and piloting instrumentation for data collection, preparing results from data analyses, and assisting primary authors in writing technical reports, journal-quality papers, and proposals. Typical studies involve on-site data collection at K-12 schools via surveys, interviews, and observations, and therefore, some experience and skills in communicating with principals, teachers, and parents is desirable. This position will involve working with multiple studies, in different geographic areas, to support senior-level project management and research work by CRRE. It will involve collaborating directly with project principal investigators (PIs) and existing CRRE staff and faculty.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent writing and presentation skills, experience with data entry and organization, attention to detail, as well as exceptional time management abilities.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Works under the supervision of the project PI, who will provide assignments and training, and communicate regularly with the educational research assistant regarding project status.
Works with the evaluation team in preparing instruments such as questionnaires, interview protocols, and observation guides for collecting evaluation data from project sites (primarily schools). Specifically, the research assistant will review draft instruments and may conduct a literature search for existing instruments that meet the needs of the evaluation. The research assistant may create an online survey based on the documents provided.
Participate as a team member in the implementation of the evaluation studies via site visits, conference calls, and email communications.
Assists senior staff in the development, testing, and evaluation of manuals, questionnaires, and coding structures to ensure the accurate and efficient collection of data.
Codes and prepares for analysis data obtained from questionnaires, observations, interviews, and student achievement (or other) measures. Preparation may include consolidating interviews and organizing surveys, observation, and student achievement (or other) data.
Assists senior staff in conducting scholarly literature searches and reviews of prior research as needed for evaluation projects and papers.
Conducts interviews by phone or in person with study participants, such as teachers, parents, principals, organization staff, and others as needed.
Conducts observations of schools and classes using standardized protocols, particularly involving the uses of educational technology for instruction and learning.
Administers questionnaires to selected groups (parents, teachers, principals, ed tech developers), and achievement tests and other measures to students as required for studies.
Prepares and writes detailed reports to clients and sponsors compiling and summarizing findings.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Effectively communicates with educational practitioners and other groups associated with education.
Skilled at administering surveys, interviews, rubrics, observations, and other data collection/assessment tools.
Skilled and experienced in preparing qualitative and quantitative data for analysis by CRRE staff.
Good organizational and time-management skills.
Ability and flexibility to work in person and by phone/email with diverse groups in varied geographic areas.
Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and developing and working with spreadsheets/databases.
Analytical skills such as experience examining data within Excel.
Ability to travel.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
One or more years' experience as a researcher on applied education projects, including data collection, interviews, survey design, and implementation.
