The Highlights:
Reporting to the Chair, the Laboratory/Safety Manager ensures that the Chemistry and Biochemistry department's teaching and research operations are carried out in a safe and efficient manner. This includes managing the department's chemical inventory, waste collection and processing, providing proper chemical hygiene instruction to faculty, staff, and students, supervising student lab workers, and serving as a liaison to Risk Management/Environmental Health and Safety.
What You'll Do:
Oversees lab chemical and equipment inventory, waste management and disposal, and laboratory safety.
Prepares the laboratory spaces for chemistry lab courses. Sees that teaching laboratories are prepared (including chemical reagents), safe, and operational before the start of each session.
Recruits, hires, schedules, and serves as the direct supervisor of student lab workers who carry out logistical operations in support of lab courses.
Develops and implements protocols to ensure safe use of all teaching and research labs. Trains faculty, staff, and students on lab safety protocols. Handles emergency situations such as chemical spills, personal injury during labs, etc.
May assist the chair, faculty, and staff with purchases needed for the department.
May assist with instrumentation maintenance.
Hires, schedules, and supervises student lab workers within the constraints of the budget alloted for such workers. Approximately five direct student worker reports. The Laboratory/Safety Manager refers decisions to hire beyond budgetary limits to the Chair. The Laboratory/Safety Manager refers complex disciplinary measures to the Chair.
May assist the chair, faculty, and staff with purchases in support of teaching laboratory and safety operations. Has the responsibility to see that the student worker budget caps are not exceeded.
What You'll Need:
This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of chemistry

This position does not require any specific certificates or licenses. Certification in safety-related issues is preferred.

This position requires the movement of supplies and equipment that routinely exceed 50 pounds, including 240 liter liquid nitrogen dewars and 55 gallon drums.
It is expected that this position will cross-train with the Lab Coordinator position responsible for instrumentation in order to provide coverage if necessary due to absences.
